“The dogs were unleashed, left their owner's property and charged toward the man, who retreated into his garage,” according to the press release. “The man felt threatened by the dogs and shot them both. One dog was found deceased in the garage while the other fled back to its owner and was taken to a veternarian.”

The release continues: “All shots were fired within the resident's single-car garage, where the resident was cornered. The evidence in the case supports the resident's story.”

Its really sad when this kind of thing happens, but how is the man supposed to know they are not dangerous.

The fault here is the owners for not securing their own pets.

Thanks MT, and can I just say that I really appreciate your posts. I never imagined there were so many different scenarios for defensive firearm use. It’s really helped me. Keep up the good work.

Love the SSS rule. I’ve never had to implement it. Yet.

I guess he was supposed to toss them Milk-Bones and only if that failed to redirect the dogs should he shoot?

It’s really pretty easy to know if dos who approach you are or are not dangerous. If they’re bonding, wagging, frisking, and giving play invitations, then they want to make friends and play. If they’re snarling, showing they teeth, and aggressively barking, then watch out.

I've never seen numbers, but would guess more four- than two-legged menaces are shot each year by law-abiding citizens.

With all due respect, that works in some cases. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen dogs act as if they’d warm up, only to have them snap at me.

Dogs like to sniff you to check you out. When a dog seems agreeable, I’ll stick my hand out and let them sniff, rather than go for the immediate contact by rubbing them.

Sometimes they’ll nose your hand and you can then advance to rubbing. Other times they’ll sniff then snap.

You can never really tell about dogs.

What I was a kid, our friends had a Dachshund. That dog never warmed up to my brother or I. It would act friendly for a few moments, you’d be rubbing it, then out of the blue go postal. I’ve never seen a dog like that before or since.

So wigglies, don’t always mean a green light.

Oh no. The dog was an aspiring rapper. Good to his puppies. Got in with the wrong crowd.

Two amish dogs again.

Police said in a Sunday news release that the two “pit bull type” dogs were charging at the man, who felt threatened. -

Completely different scenerio if you’re dealing with cats.

If the cat is being nice...watch out.

Are you suggesting that the dogs were not dangerous? If so, how do you know?
