Those on the government dole are his major constituents and he wants to keep them, who cares about those who are paying taxes to fund them.

And we wouldn't possibly want to eliminate funding for such "important" programs such as a "raisin reserve"?! (/sarc)

Why Does The United States Government Need A "Raisin Reserve?"

I thought the House “doled” out money. Where did the _resident derive this authority?

The boy can’t help himself. He loves being able to spend other people’s money and get away with it.

The _resident told us he didn't agree with sequester, (after he said he did), so I'm baffled where he ever agreed to spending cuts.

Until recently he was running in excess of $1 trillion dollar per year deficits.  Some years he ran in excess of $1.5 trillion in deficits.  The economy limping along has turned things around a bit, but that was only because things were so bad at one point, there wasn't much place to go but up, then many people have fallen off unemployment and other benefits too.

Federal entitlements are driving this spending growth, having increased from less than half of total federal outlays just 20 years ago to nearly 62 percent in 2012. Three major programs—Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security—dominate in size and growth, soaking up about 44 percent of the budget. All three programs are growing faster than inflation, and—when joined with $1.7 trillion in new Obamacare spending—will drain about 18.5 percent of the nation’s total economic output by mid-century. Because that is about the historical annual average of total federal tax revenue, it means all other government programs—national defense, veterans health care, transportation, federal law enforcement, and others—would effectively have to be financed on borrowed money.

Other entitlements continue growing as well. Anti-poverty programs have surged by 49 percent in just the past decade, even after adjusting for inflation. Spending for food stamps alone has more than tripled since 2002. Health programs, including Medicaid, have increased by 38 percent, and housing assistance by 48 percent.

Although these entitlement programs have dominated the government’s spending growth, discretionary spending—spending authorized by annual appropriations bills—also has grown by 40 percent more than inflation, to $1.289 trillion. Spending on non-defense programs has grown 29 percent. These outlays peaked in 2010 due to the stimulus bill, but remain 7 percent higher than their pre-stimulus level of 2008.

Obama behaves like any other socialist that obtains power. Government only expands and is never curtailed. There is no fundamental appreciation how real wealth is created or the value those who generate the wealth.Long term effects of policies, programs and regulations are never considered. Economies stagnate, contract and living standards decline. It happens virtually every time anywhere the Left comes to power.

What if the government shut down and no one noticed?

I guess we will never find out.

But just imagine the heat the Dims would get from the gimme crowd. It would be fun.

Obama knows his economy is a total failure, and its agenda cannot be sustained financially. So what does he do? He forces the HOR Republicans to stand firm, or look like useless wimps and cave. Then he bullies enough of them to cave so he gets his way. Then they still get blamed for the mess because everybody sees that they have neither integrity nor conviction. And the 'pubs will lose, because nobody likes useless wimps.

What's the answer? Stand up to Obama, and stand togerher. They just had a chance to do so by voting down NSA spying on US citizens, and they couldn't even get that one right.....and that's with a lot of democratic votes.

Food stamps are a hugh waste of taxpayer dollars with the current system. It needs major revision:

- Stamps are only good for food from a grocery store. Not a fast food joint, not a corner convenience store.

- Limit the types of food stamps can be used for. This would be new. Eliminate all junk food.

I’m really tired of folks checking out at the grocery with their EBT card and their basket is piled high with potato chips, every kind of snack cake you can imagine, pretzels, candy. Absolute junk food.

The amount of money the gvt spends on food stamps doesn’t necessarily have to be reduced. But what can be bought with stamps can be changed.
