Tea Party Groups Split Over McConnell's Re-Election

There is a divide in the tea party movement over Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's re-election efforts, as two national tea party groups have already endorsed the Kentucky senator and local groups push for a potential primary challenger.

The United Kentucky Tea Party group condemned the move of TheTeaParty.net and Tea Party Nation who have already endorsed McConnell, and said that United Kentucky will support Louisville businessman Matthew Bevin, who is expected to announce his candidacy Wednesday, The Wall Street Journal reports.

"We see him a lot in the same vein as Texas Sen. Ted Cruz," said Scott Hofstra, spokesman for the United Kentucky Tea Party. "If he decides to get into the race, we will support him wholeheartedly."

Hofstra issued an open letter signed by 15 local tea party groups to the two national tea party groups chastising them for showing a "lack of research" and "poor judgment" by endorsing McConnell.

"Senator McConnell's progressive liberal voting record, his absolute iron-fist rule of the Republican Party in Kentucky and his willingness to roll over and cede power to President Obama and the liberals in Washington prove that he is no friend to the American people or the citizens of the Commonwealth of Kentucky," the letter said.

Hofstra cited McConnell's support for raising the debt ceiling every time it was increased under President George W. Bush, the TARP financial bailout, free trade agreements, and the 1986 immigration bill. The letter also criticized the Kentucky senator for negotiating a tax bill that froze Bush-era tax rates for those making less than $400,000.

Jesse Benton, McConnell's campaign manager, said Bevin "is not a Kentucky conservative, he is merely a traveling con man. While it is sad to see someone who claims to be a Republican doing Barack Obama's bidding, his campaign is nothing more than a nuisance."

If the Tea Party can be “split” by this, then the splitting faction is obviously consisting of liberal “grievous wolves” instead and not real conservatives.

I can’t believe there is a split. If you’re Conservative then Chins McConnell has to be primaried. Same for Boehner. The raisin sacks need to go.

Better to stabbed from the front by an enemy than stabbed in the back by a “friend.”

“Tea Party Groups Split Over McConnell’s Re-Election”

Then F them if they end up getting screwed.

Don’t waste societies time bitching about RINOs just to vote for one because why? He thickened up his country accent and said a few nice “conservative” phrases?

This makes me suspect that Tea Party groups are being heavily infiltrated by fake phony frauds, liberals are much like al-queda, in tactics, while always smiling in your face.

I question their bona fides, especially if they come out for McConnell so soon. I am waiting for Sarah's FReedom Party. That is the only one I'd trust at the national level unless someone I trusted like Kristinn or Jim vouched for them.

There are as many different types and flavors of the ‘tea party’ as there are of tea.

No one group or organization has the monopoly. Many, even very left-leaning, have tried to infiltrate and revamp the concept to their own ideals.

Just because a group or organization claims it is ‘the tea party’ does not mean it represents those who claim to be a part of ‘the tea party’ movement.

==

Of course the progressives/leftists/Dems/GOPe would love to see the various factions of ‘tea parties’ fighting among themselves. Divide and conquer. It works, whether the divisiveness is race or politics.

Can’t imagine any ‘genuine’ tea-party group rallying around McConnell. Perhaps one might conceivably stand-down if McConnell’s potential opponent turns out to be a clunker. But to actually “rally” behind McConnell?? Any such tea-party group would pretty much lose all credibility in my eyes.

A lot of this Tea Party support for McConnell is being driven by Rand Paul. McConnell’s campaign manager (Benton) was Paul’s last cycle.

The deal is that if Paul rallies to McConnell, McConnell returns the favor by throwing his fundraising weight behind Paul’s expected 2016 Presidential bid.

ANY nationally organized “Tea Party” is a RINO counterfeit. The essence of Tea Party patriots is local. . .it is our strength and, sometimes, our weakness. . .to lead the Tea Party in any one direction is like herding cats.

Yeah and rove has called Conservatives much, much worse. This is the MO of all liberal republican elites... and this jerk is mcconnell’s man so he is uber elite. Is the dude a wiccan... is he a warlock? How about a vampire? Did he have a DUI offense or did he ever snort coke? Did he inhale? Did he have sex with multiple women in his life? Was he late on a mortgage payment? All of this will be the tools of a bumbling fool named mcconnell... because he can’t get reelected running on his fantastic republican leadership record.

The Tea Party is grassroots...An endorsement for the old status quo is not the Tea Party...

That's like telling us that John McCain is a Tea Party favorite...
