I think you are on the right track. To control a country (to become dictator), you must control the military. Ask Stalin, Hitler, Pol Pot, Kim Jong Il and many others of the same ilk.

Question: Why not? There's nothing exclusive about being a moral upstanding person and being ready and willing to use violence to drive evil out. (e.g. Jesus and his home-made lash, driving money-lenders out of the temple and overturning tables.)
Before we get too carried away I would like to hear the reason. There are legitimate relief of commands that have nothing to do with politics although they are pretty rare at this level. Getting a command like this means you are a fast track guy for a star.
I suspect some of the General Officers have been relieved for political reasons, but a Colonel is not likely to be someone on the White House radar. Just saying - judgment reserved on this one and regardless of whatever it was I thank the Colonel for his service. Will follow the comments on this because the truth will likely be posted at some point.
