1. Since the Senate-passed bill doesnt require the flow of illegal immigrants to stop, how can you say this approach secures the border?
No one can make that promise. The Senate bill, S.744, throws tens of billions of dollars at the problem and calls for meeting arbitrary security standards, but it doesnt guarantee that illegal immigration will stop. **snip**
2. The Senate-passed bill requires the U.S. government to manage many more visas, even though it doesnt do a good job with todays smaller work load. So how does this fix our legal immigration system?
It doesnt. The bill makes some changes to various types of visas but does little to fix the broken bureaucracy in charge of the legal immigration system. Without significant changes, new requirements and more responsibilities would only make the system worse.**snip**
3. The Senate-passed bill puts the federal government in charge of enforcing immigration laws, even though state and local governments want to help and would be good partners. Is this federal focus the right approach?
No, giving the federal government all the responsibility is the wrong approach. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has fewer than 6,000 agents, and S.744 does little to augment that. Putting all the authority in federal hands is a surefire way to hamstring enforcement, simply because the federal government cant do it all.
A million local and state law enforcement officers are ready and willing to help enforce federal immigration law. These officers know their communities best and are already in place. By partnering through programs such as 287(g), state and local authorities can help. Sadly, S.744 ignores them.

The House will not pass the senate bill, but the senate bill is a good example of what the House might end up voting on.
If they actually were to take a vote on the senate bill, and only the senate bill I think it would not pass, and that would be fine by me. It’s if they vote on one that sounds better, then go to conference with senate on it that we’ll get screwed. If you call your congresscritter, and I suggest you do, that’s the worst thing they can do: Pretend they are making a “better bill”, then getting screwed in the reconciliation conference.
I have the same concern, but remember that Boehner brought up the senate VAWA bill and it passed rhe House with Dems and a cowardly RINOs.
Anyway, the House Judiciary Committee is well into creating its own "comprehensive immigration" bill and has already passed 2 chunks of it.
I don’t trust Boehner, that’s why I’ve called my rep a couple of times. I’m asking him to be a leader in making sure that NO bill gets brought up and voted on, reminding him what happened to the House after W brought up the bill in 2006. I’ve made it clear if he doesn’t stand up for conservative principle in this issue, he’ll not get my vote or money, but his primary opponent will. This is an issue we need to burn up the phone lines on, now and every week until the bill dies.
Told my rep the same.
How about an Immigration Bill that mandates enforcement of the laws we already have?
Vote “YES” on that one, Congress Critters!
