American POWS sent secret coded messages to Washington with news of a Soviet atrocity: In 1943 they saw rows of corpses in an advanced state of decay in the Katyn forest, on the western edge of Russia, proof that the killers could not have been the Nazis who had only recently occupied the area.

The testimony about the infamous massacre of Polish officers might have lessened the tragic fate that befell Poland under the Soviets, some scholars believe. You left off LBJ. Of course that makes 4, but leaving him off of a list of socialist presidents omits one of the worst offenders in history. The damage that son of a b did to America is incalculable.

I heartily second your recommendation! This magnificent film literally "pushes your face" into the brutality of the Soviets - what's more, it shows the horrors inflicted on the Polish people who, although they knew full well who was responsible, faced immediate and severe punishment if they even hinted at the truth. The scenes where a young woman tried to put up a memorial with her father's true date of death on it were particularly heartbreaking.

Be prepared, however for a film that makes no attempt to shield you from the ghastliness (My wife was unable to watch it all the way through.)
