More than half a dozen explosions were heard as they clashed with security personnel at the palace's eastern gate, the defence ministry and a CIA station.
The police said all of the attackers were killed. The Taliban said they carried out the assault.
The incident comes days after President Hamid Karzai raised objections about US-backed peace talks with the Taliban.
He said the High Peace Council, the government body set up to lead peace efforts, would not take part unless the process was "Afghan-led". News conference
The attack near the presidential palace, in the central district of Shash Darak, began at about 06:30 local time (02:00 GMT).
The militants initially targeted the palace's eastern gate - a few hundred metres from the actual building - where dozens of journalists had gathered for a news conference with President Karzai scheduled for 09:00.

In the dictionary next to the word Failure is an 8 by 10 glossy picture of Soetoro, autographed.
Never has more American treasure, material and human, been squandered. Next time someone wants to nation build in a country dedicated to the customs of the 9th century, send thirty thousand laptops with a good internet connection instead of thirty thousand young brave American soldiers led by politically correct senior officers.
Let the Russians have it.
Just to make sure Karzai gets the message.
Storm 333 redux?
Kerry, Karzai, and the Taliban who officially opened their new headquarters in Qatar on 18th June this year. Within a few days after that Kerry states he wanted to speak with the Taliban directlyThis p-o’d Karzai who then cancelled out of it all. Now the Taliban attacks Karzi. Did Kerry intend to p.o Karzai and if so why...so the Taliban would have an excuse to retaliate?
Note: Heroin exports have increased to 78% in Afghanistan making it a lucrative country.
“Let the Russians have it.”
Wish we’d done that a couple decades ago.
Hindsight is 20/20.
Only the beginning. Just wait until the day after the last of our troops pull out. The ROTUS((p)Resident Of The United States) should be proud. I’m sure karzai has a nice place in Switzerland all ready to go with the money he’s “sequestered” for such an event.
A very interesting tweet. Thank you.
And so it starts. Think Fall of Saigon.

I have been saying, even before I signed on here, that if I were the Taliban, I would lay low til OB pulls out and take over province by provence.
I predicted they would run Kabul a year after we left. Now I think it will be sooner.
Let’s hope they let the last plane leave without an attack.
It’s looking like you were on the money but one can’t help but think they were assisted in their goal by other powerful people. There’s money in them thar hills. Heroin is pure gold, not only for the powder, but also for the business of care centers, PHARMA, and so on...it also keeps a share (and when they legalize it - a larger share) of the population easily managed/manipulated, docile/crazy and so on...in the long run though there’s only one answer - the only think that makes sense to me....
karzai is the walking dead. He knows it. We know it. And WE dom’t care.
“Can’t we all just get along?” /s
