This report demonstrates otherwise but I have grave doubts on the veracity, legitimacy of what it purports to convey.
Call me a cynic but I believe there's a deeper more sinister point to the report and that is as a message to xenophobes that there's no need to feel threatened by the multitude of Hispanics entering the country illegally or even the need to build a boundary fence with Mexico to keep them out, because eventually as these fine, hard-working folks arrive, as generations past have done, legally or otherwise, in search of their own American dream, like previous generations have in fact been shedding their local ethnicity conforming to the American way of life, it's culture, like a snake shedding its skin for a brand new shiny one underneath.
So, I don't necessarily buy this demographic dream the left-wing liberals have concocted about the future and any need to worry about illegals overrunning the country or having to build a ridiculous, overly expensive fence we are ill-equipped to build financially, politically, anyway.
WSJ, are you kidding? You are right to doubt the veracity of this article.
I knew a Hispanic girl 25 years ago who told me that her dad would get angry whenever anyone in the house spoke Spanish. “You are Americans now, and you must speak English!”
I have the impression though that situation has changed light-years since I knew her.
Too bad there isn’t a wave of illegals waiting to take all the editorial jobs at the WSJ. They might have a different take on the blessings of illegal aliens.
Who wrote this? Paul Gigot? He’s been schilling for amnesty for at least ten years, since he took over the WSJ editorial page when Robert Bartley died.
The whole assumption is WRONG since previous legal “immigrants” got no benefits on the backs of taxpayers and had to swim or sink as they became US citizens with total loyalty to the US for giving them a chance to swim.
Most immigrants assimilate. So what? That is no argument for open borders or amnesty for tens of millions.
Typical liberal Utopian line of attack: Everyone is the same, all people are equal. You think otherwise and you’re a racist.
America is not assimilating “Hispanics”, they are assimilating America. All you have to do is look around, they denigrate every aspect of American life, turning neighborhoods into Tijuana as fast as possible. Learn English? hell no! we are supposed to learn to speak Spanish! This is the major problem, they don’t want to be Americans (after all we stole Aztlan from them) they just want everything they can suck out of America!
WSJ has been running an incessant parade of left wing opinion pieces. And their hard news is totally skewed as well. It is the functional equivalent of the NY Slimes.
Want to know when we’ll know hispanics are assimilating into America?
When I make a phone call and I never, ever again hear:
“Press 1 for English...”
my experience shows they are not assimilating except for a small percentage...generally the better educated and informed illegals. the majority still want to go back Mexico after they fleece the USA.
Where will their petulant offspring invade after they turn America in the hellhole they escaped from? Invade and multiply appears to be their religion.
Mexico is absorbing the United States, already close to 10% of their population has physically relocated to here.
Assimilating?!?!?!
Then why do I have to “press 1 for English”?????
The schools and laws actively DISCOURAGE “assimilation”!!!
Agree. It does not matter that many of the Hispanics show some signs of âassimilating.â What counts is the small dedicated minority that is âHell Bentâ on reconquest. La Raza comes to mind. I had a young Chicana lawyer tell me once “We are taking over here!” They are in California, Arizona Nevada and Texas the very states we obtained by way of the war with Mexico.
Are second and third generation "Hispanics" voting for Big Government??
WSJ doesn't address that aspect.
What the article does not address is the phenomenon of two Hispanics completely fluent in English but still reverting to Spanish when speaking with each other. En masse this can create Spanish speaking colonies despite the fact that the majority of them can speak English.
“This report demonstrates otherwise but I have grave doubts on the veracity, legitimacy of what it purports to convey.”
That report is a steaming crock of $%^#.
The WSJ is a stronghold of the Treason Lobby- their idiot former editor wanted a Constitutional Amendment stating “There Shall Be Open Borders”. And their current editor is just as bad.
They have no interest in telling the truth when it comes to immigration.
Typically, the first generation immigrants are very poor but are willing to work long hours at tedious or physically demanding jobs. One thing that they do not do, however, is encourage their children to obtain the education and skills in order to have higher-paying, higher-skill jobs. As a result, the kids are given the choice: do a dead end job like dad for minimum wage, live on welfare, or run in a gang and engage in crime. All too often, the children of Mexican immigrants choose options 2 or 3.
Culturally, I've noticed that the first and second generations opt out of both Mexican culture and mainstream American culture. They often speak barrio Spanglish instead of either Spanish or English, and act in ways that wouldn't be acceptable in either Mexico or the United States. A smaller subset (the Chicano activist types) prefer reverse assimilation, refusing to speak any English at all or take part in any aspect of American life.
