The Social Security Administration is implementing a policy change to make it easier for the transgender community to change the update their gender designation in records kept by the agency.
Transgender people can make the modification by submitting government-issued documents reflecting the new sex, or by presenting the SSA with a medical certification of appropriate clinical treatment for gender transition, according to the new rules.
Previously, the SSA required documentation of specific surgeries.
"Most people may not see this as a big deal, but transgender people know that this seemingly small technical change will protect their privacy and give them more control over their own lives," said Mara Keisling, executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE).
The group, along with the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and the National Center for Lesbian Rights, has pressed for the change for years.
Kiesling said the new policy would have a profound affect on the lives of people in the transgender community. A 2011 UCLA study estimated there are approximately 700,000 transgender people living in the United States.
Importantly, Social Security records are gateways to so many other kinds of identity documents, from driver's licenses to employment records, all of us depend on it in one way or another," she said.
...And people have the audacity to bad-mouth America. For shame. Those damn Conservatives. > sarcasm off.
As General McAullife would have said: “Nuts!”
So, if I were to declare myself a transgendered black lesbian, and then seek to have my papers altered to reflect my newly acquired diversity jackpot status, by what objective standard would I be denied? Clearly there are no objective standards.
My feelings would be hurt, so every private citizen I encounter, every employer and all government offices are therefore required to play along with my ruse. Otherwise they’re haters and I’ll sue. Stroke of a pen, kinda cool.
Actually, when the evil tyrants control the country entirely, this will be their way of hunting down the trannies and executing them. It’ll be a really long night of the long knives.
Protect their privacy? Not with Zerobamacare coming up.
This is insane.
While those who have died still receive SS checks because notices from the funeral home or the city morgue with DOB,SSN, AGE, NAME, Address, etc., do not contain enough helpful information for them to make a ‘determination’.
Does that mean I can call myself "African-American" on all feral government forms if I have decided that I am now an "African-American," and that I can avail myself of affirmative-action?
How sensitive of the IRS.
Meanwhile, back on Planet Earth, if you’ve had your SSN compromised by identity theft, the IRS doesn’t care much. I hear it’s nearly impossible to be issued a new number.
Any change of gender on file must have an actual physical change to get the gender changed. If you still got your manhood, what's the justification for being classified as a woman?
I don’t remember being asked my gender when I signed up for social security.
I do remember being asked my sex. That is easy to ascertain, as it is genetic. And I have the body parts to prove it.
I don’t really care what “gender” you “relate” to. I certainly don’t care if women wear pants, or men wear dresses, or if women go without makeup, or men wear makeup.
I do care if a woman shows up in a men’s room, and then complains if the men are being men. And I care a lot if my wife is confronted in the ladies room by some guy who pretends he is a woman.
The bathrooms don’t discriminate by gender. They discriminate by sex. You get to use the men’s room if you can pee in a urinal without a prothestic device. Or if the women’s room line is so long that the men decide to clear out for a few minutes in an act of chivalry.
If you get yourself surgically altered, then you can be a different “sex”.
