Authorities Do Not Believe The Attempted Break-In Was Part Of A Pattern Margaret Mazzio was still wound up Monday over the trouble that came knocking at her Howard Beach home recently.
“They said they were from FedEx, and they put a stupid box in the house,” she told CBS 2′s Don Champion.
Mazzio said she knew something was wrong when the men tried to shove their way past her daughter, so she turned into a tough mom.
“He wouldn’t move, so I took the inside of the door and I was pushing him and that’s when he pushed in more and I took the phone and whacked him right in the face with it,” she said.
The quick thinking by Mazzio helped her and her daughter foil the would-be thieves’ plan.
Neighbors said they are concerned that the trouble hasn’t passed, and that the men may be looking for ways to take advantage of a neighborhood struggling in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.
“You are expecting packages because of the storm. Everyone is getting new things and different things sent to their home,” Pat McMilleon said.
The box that the suspects used was empty. Investigators dusted it looking for clues. Authorities said they do not think the break-in was part of a pattern of crimes. The men were seen getting into a white Infinity driven by a third man, but descriptions of the trio have been too vague to report.
I told her I had never heard of her fund and then I asked her if it was like The Human Fund. She no, they just deal with children with cancer.
I said, well it sounds like a load of crap to me.
I hate liars.
The NY state of mind makes one wonder.

There was at least one more push in fake FedEx robbery last week. The homeowner slammed the gunman's arm in the door, causing him to drop his gun. A ten year old kid in the house picked up the gun and fired through the door. The robbers fled.
Charity Navigator is wonderful. I’ve used it to decline several and to accept several. My personal standard is that 80 percent or more of the gift goes to program services. I’ve bent that rule at 78 or 79 a couple of times, but it’s great to make a decision based on facts.

One in particular was "Vietnam Veterans of Virginia Fund" who called me 3 times a day and often at night. When I tried to call them back to make them stop, none of their numbers allowed a direct call back. I did some searching on the internet and found the outfit running things for VVVF and they turned out to be Xentel, a marketing firm that specializes in intense phone harrassment for veterans, police, and firefighter "charities". I also found out that Xentel keeps close to 90% of the money they raise and the charities the remaining 10%. I called the Vietnam Veterans of Virginia and spoke to the president and he was just fine with the Xentel tactics, since "10% was better than nothing". I was able to secure the home phone numbers for that guy and the leadership of Xentel and I kept calling them until they finally stopped calling me.
I also tried to get a case going with the Virginia Attorney General for fraud but I was notified that they wouldn't press a case because "the Supreme Court has held that charities can solicit directly for funds, even if they only receive a small amount of the funds". Apparently, fraud is OK, as long as you claim that you're a charity. Somewhat disappointed with 'ol Ken Cuccinelli on this issue.
Since then, I only contribute to my church on Sunday - and I watch them like a hawk.

Howard Beach was severely damaged in Sandy. A several block area went on fire and dozens and dozens of houses were burnt down along with storm damage. Yes, they are still struggling to get back on their feet. It is bad.
We used to get so many calls on our land line that my wife started unplugging the phone.
I told her the second is she realizes it’s a solicitation, tell them “We don’t accept solicitations on this line. Goodbye.” Then hang up. Even if it’s a recording.
I know it’s hard to believe, but we now only get one or two calls a week. My kids race to the phone to be the first to politely tell them to bug off.
Maybe you should check your facts before running your keyboard. Large sections of Howard Beach are still without basic utilities - street electric, running water, etc. Whole neighborhoods leveled. Those folks are truly struggling - not sucking the teat. Many families have chosen to remain, trying to rebuild. A good portion have left and are gone for good.
