It is Now Illegal to Annoy New York Police Officers

Yesterday the New York state Senate passed Bill S.2402, which officially makes it illegal to "annoy" police officers. Now the bill must go on to the State Assembly.

"Annoying" or "harassing" a police officer would be a "Class E" felony, which, in the eyes of New York State, is equal to aggravated assault upon a person less than 11 years of old, female genital mutilation, promoting a suicide attempt, and cemetery desecration, among other laws. There is no specification in the law as to what will be considered "annoying" or "harassing" an officer besides "subjecting them to physical contact."

The sponsor of the bill is Republican State Senator Joseph Griffo who represents New York's 47th district. The Justification of the bill is given as:

"Police officers all across this state put their lives on the line every day to protect the people of New York. New York State must establish laws and toughen existing laws that protect the police from becoming victims of criminals. Far too many law enforcement officers are being harassed, injured, even killed while honoring their commitment to protect and serve this state. The Legislature has a responsibility to do everything we can to protect our brave heroes, our police officers, from violent criminals. This legislation contributes to that premise."

This will be a controversial law, especially in New York City where the NYPD has garnered a lot of criticism for its use of the "Stop and Frisk" tactics. There is no way to tell now how this law will effect "Stop and Frisk" or the ongoing NYC protests associated with the Occupy Wall Street movement.....

I visited NY in January, and found the police officers courteous.

"Why would someone want to annoy a NY police officer? Who is wanting it to be legal to do this?"

You are wearing a T-shirt that says Taxed Enough Already Tea Party Member.

It annoys a NY Cop so he arrests you and books you on this new sparky law.

Understand now?

NYC may finance it but San Francisco is the root and capital

Suggestion for Freepers in NY: Push a liberal into a cop.

I love me some fascism.

An authoritarian Republican clown. How quaint.

Both parties have profoundly betrayed us...

This isn’t a New York City thing. The idiot Rpublican/Conservative state senator is from a district that stretches from Utica and Rome NY to the Canadian border. http://www.nysenate.gov/district/47

As a former street punk and youth sub culture aficionado, I find it entertaining to watch the hard right slowly evolve into an extreme wariness of law enforcement due to their now being on the receiving end of various forms of “police brutality”, previously experienced in the main by lefties and radicals. These are interesting times.

Kinda fun also to watch conservatives becoming aware of the “conspiracy” end of the political spectrum. Simply amazing what being the UNDERDOG can do for a philosophical outlook. Time for left and right to shake hands on these issues and get some cross talk going on. I’d like to see a meetup between Sarah Palin and Matt Taibibi. I knew a lot of aging punkers in Oregon, when I lived in Bandon a few years back, who hung out and went shooting with the Oregon Militia, preppers before it was a fad with a reality show on prime time. we got along fine around the campfire and learned from each other. Forthright, aware and courageous people of any stripe have more in common than any “ideology” would want to dictate.

Nobody has an exclusive patent on being misguided or subject to peer influence.
