Improved shielding technology could keep exposure within acceptable levels.
Astronauts travelling to Mars on any of the current space-flight vehicles would receive a dose of radiation higher than NASA standards permit, according to a study of the radiation environment inside the craft that carried the Curiosity rover to the planet.
The study, reported in Science1, is the first to use radiation data recorded by a robotic craft en route to Mars. It is also the first to rely on measurements from a radiation detector in space that has shielding similar to what might be used on missions carrying humans, says physicist Sheila Thibeault of NASAs Langley Research Center in Virginia, who was not involved in the study.
Previous calculations of exposure were extrapolations, notes study co-author Cary Zeitlin of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado. Those studies used detectors in space that either had no shielding or were aboard Mars-bound craft whose instruments were not switched on until they reached the planet.
The measurements made by the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission, which landed Curiosity in August 2012, are at the high end of those extrapolations and therefore are not a big surprise, Zeitlin says. But scientists could not be certain that the extrapolations were accurate until they examined the data detected by the spacecraft, he adds. Models are all well and good, but theres no substitute for data.
Zeitlin and his colleagues analysed the radiation recorded by a small detector on board the craft that was active during most of the 253-day cruise to Mars. Although the craft was not uniformly protected from exposure to Galactic cosmic rays and charged particles from the Sun, the MSLs shielding on average approximated that of human space-flight missions...

Just pack the bulkheads with liberals. They’re cheap, denser than lead, and disposable.
“Models are all well and good, but there’s no substitute for data.” This guy needs to talk to the globull warming, excuse me, the climate change crowd.
So this doesn't come with a guarantee?
>> Models are all well and good, but theres no substitute for data.
Funny/sad how that statement stands out in front of the article’s primary focus.

I don’t think so. Toasters are like bic lighters, use them 200 times and throw them away. Junk...
.66 sv each way=66 rads. Plus another 100 probably on surface. You will likely die early from it, but that’s how it goes. Since it’s stretched out over years though, you probably won’t have any acute symptoms. It’s worse than most exposure, but honestly under 2 rad per hour for days on end won’t outright kill you. 200 at once yes, but this is talking over many many years.
I have always wondered how water would work as shielding. During long trips they are going to need to store adequate water to recycle. I imagine a double haul craft with water transferred in orbit before the long flight would be an option.
Use a lot of Demron, it is lightweight...
Forget Mars. We need to focus on earth for a while.
Forget Mars. We need to focus on earth for a while.
Your assumption is false. The problems on Earth will not be fixed or solved by moving off planet because the problem resides in the sinful heart of man. No matter where we go or colonize we will perpetuate the problems because man, without Christ IS the problem.
Yeah, whatever. I wasn’t talking about human nature. More about issues of wealth, space, and resources—which are the basis for many human problems and conflicts.
