Application submitted to the US Patent and Trademark office shows Microsoft's plans for tracking viewing habits of Xbox owners.
The company plans to reward viewers who watch adverts or shows with credits and achievements.
The new Kinect sensor can follow eye movements, track your reaction to shows using heart-rate monitors and see you in the dark.
Microsoft has submitted a patent that could see the company track every TV show and advert watched via its Xbox One console and other devices. The application called 'Awards and Achievements Across TV Ecosystem' was submitted to the US Patent and Trademark office earlier this month. It details plans for Microsoft to reward viewers for watching adverts, TV shows or series, with virtual scores, or physical awards such as coupons and products - although it is expected the plans will be opt-in, and not turned on by default.

Yet more ways of tracking us.
As if I didn’t hate Microsoft enough. Just another reason why I won’t buy an Xbox.
Watching television is now an achievement?
George Orwell was wrong—about the timing.
I think google and yahoo do the same thing and that is why they are willing to give you a free email account. You stay logged in and they send you advertisement bumps based on your activity.
I am no expert, nor am I a conspiracy theorists, so if I have this wrong I apologize and please correct me.
I know that google does it with their app store for cell phones. Yahoo I am not sure about. I would not be surprised.
What happens if you disconnect the XBOX HDMI cable while watching TV? Or you don’t have a LIVE account? Or you prevent the XBOX MAC address from connecting to your wireless router?
“The new Kinect sensor can follow eye movements, track your reaction to shows using heart-rate monitors and see you in the dark.”
I am reminded of a book that’s title was a date.
Does the Xbox one even have a cable card? I have a Tivo Premier and I know already that it does tracking. I’m not sure I’d really even want my game console to be a DVR. Seems that Sony is going more for games this round and MS going more for TV/cable replacement market. MS’s stuff seems way more draconian in general than the PS4 so far, but it’s still early.
Earlier today, I bought two of those headlamps from Grainger. This afternoon I clicked on Drudge and saw a Grainger ad for the same lights. Coincidence or cookies?
Will it pause the commercial until I get back if I get up and get a snack or hit the bathroom? After all, if I don’t watch the commercials it’s stealing from the network.
Then nothing of course. But, the new xbox will have cable box tuner functionality so they are anticipating many people replacing their cable box with it.
Cookies.
Oh joy! And a added bonus is “your” used games are worthless.
Does the information get directly passed onto the IRS and if you are a conservative the X-box electrocutes you?
They can’t track me. I don’t watch TV. Haven’t for years.
Just another reason why I wont buy an Xbox.”
I bought an Xbox for my oldest grandson to play games on about ten years ago. The youngest one plays games on the same unit now and has every auto racing game ever made. But he understands that under no circumstances will it ever be connected to the internet.
I also have a Tetras game I love to play - unfortunately, could never get either one of the grandsons to play either that or our golf game with me.
Train your dog to watch tv.
