Several hundred thousand opponents of same-sex marriage marched in central Paris on Sunday against a reform the unpopular French government passed last month at the price of deepening political polarization.
Large park grounds around Les Invalides monument were full of protesters waving pink and blue flags, while far-right activists hung a banner on the ruling Socialist Party headquarters urging President Francois Hollande to quit.
The protests, which began as a grass roots campaign strongly backed by the Roman Catholic Church, have morphed into a wider movement with opposition politicians and far-right militants airing their discontent with Hollande.
Although they have failed to block gay marriage, the protesters hope their renewed show of force will help stop or slow down further laws some Socialists want allowing assisted procreation and surrogate motherhood for gay couples.
Jean-Francois Cope, leader of the opposition UMP party, marched in the demonstration and urged young protesters to join his party to keep up pressure on the left-wing government.
"The next rendez-vous should be at the ballot boxes for the municipal elections," he said, referring to local polls due next year where conservatives hope to profit from the protest movement's unexpectedly strong mobilization.
While the rally was peaceful throughout much of the day, police said they arrested 96 hardline opponents to the gay marriage law later on for refusing to disperse or occupying private property.

I know. If we don’t get a little sophisticated, here, and see where this is leading, we ARE going to be in trouble.
It is a forgone conclusion all over Europe...
White people are fed up with the genocidal policies of their own governments and the EUSSR.
The common denominator and the driving force there is Christianity.
The communists always targeted America as their great hope. Why do you think they celebrate International Workers’ Day on May 1?
how sad that we can’t even get a party , hell we can’t even get all freepers to oppose this homosexual agenda.
I;ts pathetic and cowardly for talk radio, many in the stupid party and even some on here to not want to raise these kind of mainstream traditional issues
It’s tricky, like most things political.
Whoever fights this has to have a very firm vision of the truth of the matter and what it means for the future. They have to understand how important culture is.
We, in this country cannot seem to get it.
The French do not allow the influx of language change.
Their country is catholic, if you don’t think so, go over there and check it out.
the Catholic view of homosexuality is pertinent to any culture and for any culture.
It’s logical and it in in no way based on hate. I suspect that’s from where these protesters base their view.
They allow a muslim takeover of their cities, an openly adulterous president, taxes that shock Hollywood expat wanna bes and abortion, and they protest this.
Why?
Because it’s more destructive than all of that.it comes from all of that, and those things should have been protested before it got to that, but this is a point of no return and they know it.
We don’t.
they know culture because they live it. they know its value.
We don’t.
And our hatred of Catholicism (that the French do not have) blinds us to its wisdom.
But I didn’t see it on my evening news! How could that be?
It is possible to destroy a civilization with a stroke of a pen. The French know that, for they have experienced it many times in their history since 1789 and even before. They also know from experience that it takes centuries of efforts to rebuild civilization. After the first event on January 13, 2013 (one million "white of the white" participants, including many women and children), the March 24 brought together more participants yet. They even ended up occupying a portion of the Champs-Elysees despite the roadblocks set by the National Police and their tear gas.
One would be blind not to see the reality in this mobilization: a mass revolt against the destruction of the family, against the last pillar of our European civilization being shaken. Every child has the right to know where he comes from, who is his father and who is his mother. It is worth remembering that 33 centuries ago, the Trojan War was caused to enforce the union of Achaean king Menelaus and his wife Helen, kidnapped by a Trojan prince. All the kings of the Achaean federation had sworn to protect Helen's marriage to Menelaus. And they united to bring Helen's home. And war was concluded with the destruction of Troy. It became the narrative of the Iliad , the poem at the foundation of our civilization.
