napalmI rather suspect it was more like what is fondly known as a "molotov cocktail." It is as with dogs, I think. If the police shoot a "menacing" dog it was a Pit Bull even if it was disguised as an Irish Setter.

It isn't that difficult. 5 minutes on the internet (or a trip to the bookstore/surplus store for you old school types) and a rummage through the kitchen, bathroom, or garage and you can make stuff to make the whole neighborhood shake. Even "harmless" ingredients like aspirin or coffee can make for a very bad day.
Many posters have talked about Vaseline, heavyweight motor oil, or packing peanuts/Styrofoam added in gas........egg whites will work well too.
It doesn't take a genius to build a bomb. If you can read at a 4th grade level and bake a cake you can make a bomb.
