If these arent the end times, I fear what those might look like. The countrys pioneering alt-weekly, New York Citys Village Voice, has experienced sharp decreases in ad revenue, circulation and staff in recent years. As the paper continues efforts to keep its head above water, a turnoverfilled May has perhaps sounded the papers figurative demise, suggesting that its literal end may come sooner than later.
On May 9, the Voices parent company, Voice Media Group, informed editors of its plan to restructure the paper, which involved further staff cuts. Upon hearing the plans, Editor in Chief Will Bourne and Deputy Editor Jessica Lustig immediately resigned in protest, leaving the paper in the midst of publishing the next weeks issue. Bourne, who became the Voices sixth EIC since 2005 when he accepted the position in November 2012, told the New York Times that he was asked to lay off five of the papers 20 staff members.

Maybe the Koch brothers can buy it out.
This is TRULY Bush’s fault!
The Berkeley Barb died 33 years ago.
No need for a rag like that. The folks with their views already control the big 3 networks plus CNN and MSNBC.
The advertisers eventually figure this out when a difficult economy makes it apparent that the ads aren't working, and they go elsewhere.

[sincerity, average] How sad. [/sincerity]
You’re exactly right...you don’t need little leftwing papers anymore...you have ABCBSNBCNNPRPBS.
The msm have turned into Obama’s propaganda machine.
“By releasing esteemed, long-tenured writers in favor of cheaper alternatives, the Voice has trivialized its content, as well as its writers achievements and loyalty. While its bottom line is undeniably crucial, the paper has sent the wrong message to its staff”
The author, Alex Ash, living in the world of journalists itself, entirely misses the point.
The let-go or quitting columunists and editors, so esteemed by their peers, forgot that their peers don’t pay the bills for their employer, and inasmuch as it was apparent that their so-esteemed work (esteemed by other journalists), was not bringing in the readers, at least not enough to convince advertisers to pay more for or place more ads in The Voice.
Writers and editors sometimes forget that publishing, in print or for the web, is a business. Awards from peers may satisfy their self esteem but that is no insurance that it will pay their employers’ bills.
Nothing new here, in terms of the Village Voice. Its decline has been in process for at least 20 years or more.
These Useful Idiots have served their purpose, and are no longer useful to the Party Bosses.
Probably “didn’t see that coming” because of their blinders.
Virtually every big city newspaper has lost circulation and ad revenue. The Voice is cracking...
FWIW, Nat Hentoff is intellectually honest. He goes after Obama too.
Can’t feed the lie any more.
He is also pro life.
Exactly.
In for a rude, and scary, awakening...
They should go online only, where they spread the same stuff without killing trees
