Fewer Americans Identify as Economic Conservatives in 2013 (30% liberal on social issues)
GALLUP ^ | 05/24/2013 | Andrew Dugan

Posted on 05/24/2013 1:50:07 PM PDT by SeekAndFind

Forty-one percent of Americans now characterize their economic views as "conservative," or "very conservative," the lowest since President Barack Obama took office in 2009 and on par with where views were in May 2008. This year's downtick in the percentage of Americans identifying as economically conservative has been accompanied by an uptick in the percentage identifying as economically moderate -- now 37% of Americans, up from 32% last year.

The percentage of Americans calling themselves economic liberals has remained virtually unchanged from last year at 19%, and has not fluctuated much since 2001.

The findings are based on Gallup's annual Values and Beliefs poll, conducted May 2-7. Since 2001, the poll has asked Americans to say whether they are liberal, moderate, or conservative on "economic" and, separately, "social" issues. The interpretation of what qualifies as social or economic issues is left to the respondent; the question does not define or provide examples of these types of issues.

These results contrast with the general ideological trend Gallup measured during Obama's first term, which saw a renewed sense of Americans' self-professed conservatism, particularly in economic matters -- a phenomenon that could have reflected a backlash against the perceived liberal policies of the Democratic president.

While economic liberalism remains stagnant, the percentage of Americans describing their social views as "liberal" or "very liberal" has achieved a new peak of 30% -- in line with Gallup's recent finding that Americans are more accepting on a number of moral issues. Thirty-five percent of Americans say they are conservative or very conservative on social issues and 32% self-identify as socially moderate.

An economic collapse should straighten them out right away. Lucky for them, they won’t have to wait too long...

or more to the point, why would I indentify myself as an economic conservative, when the IRS could come knocking on my door for doing so?

Social liberalism and libertarianism, breeds economic liberals, and liberal voters, and more demand for more government from law enforcement to welfare, and as a mediator for the smallest of things.

True libertarianism vests power with the state not the fed and adheres to a federalist form of government.

Interesting. 75 percent are economic and social conservatives.

Someone needs to show this to McCain.

Interesting how conservatives are more likely to be economically liberal rather than socially liberal - exactly the opposite we are told.

Remind me why social issues are a loser?

These poll results are virtually meaningless, because low-information types don't have a clue as to what socially conservative, socially liberal, economically conservative, or economically liberal mean. Furthermore, no questions were asked on specific matters.

The dichotomy between economic and social issues is not as sharp as the Gallup people think it is. For example, the Left's idea of "social justice" affects its economic policy views considerably.

If libertarians would think about it, broken homes, broken societies, broken people, in a universal democracy, creates good, liberal, big government voters, not straight laced right wingers.

The problem is that most “moderates” would pick a liberal over a conservative every time.

True libertarianism supports homosexualizing the military and immigration at the federal level.

It also supports unlimited, unrestrained abortion and homosexual adoption, marriage, custody, etc.

Libertarians are not suddenly unlibertarian at the “state” level, they promote libertarianism at all levels, the PTA, city, county, state, federal, they are libertarians because they are not conservatives and they want to deconstruct traditional American conservatism.

When you have people sucking on the Govt tit, this is what happens and exactly what liberals want..but I wouldn’t cast too much on this poll because the low information idiot voters have no clue what a Conservative or a liberal is, all they care about is what name Kim Kardashian will name her baby

The further we get away from the end of the Cold War and the end of the Soviet Union, the more adults who don’t know anything about our history and the fight to stay free. I’ll bet a great percentage of the techie and computer whizzes who love Obama and uber-liberalism know little or nothing about the history of their own country.

Don’t confuse the Libertarian party with libertarian-ism. There is a right and left to the libertarian belief system. One is more compatible with conservatism the other with progressives. This is no different than the Republican split between RINOs and conservatives. The right leaning branch of the Libertarian party falls in-between that divide and can provide votes in an election.
