MOSCOW – A powerful earthquake on Friday hit Russia's Far East with tremors felt as far away as Moscow, about 4,400 miles west of the epicenter.

Marina Kolomiyets, spokeswoman for Obninsk's seismic station of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told The Associated Press the epicenter was in the Sea of Okhotsk, east of the Russian coast and north of Japan. She said the quake registered 8.0 on the Richter scale.

I was hoping to have coffee with you before your departure...

Don’t worry. We still have six months. I was going to apply for an extension but last time I did that was August of 1939. And a couple weeks later I was having Coffee with a friend in Warsaw and, well, I almost didn’t make it. We’re tough, but not THAT tough.

This one might get even hairier...

Are you mocking me?

No. I just used your post as a springboard to high irrelevance. ;-)

I should have used a post from someone who knows me well.

Sorry about that.

This was so deep it had no negative impact on anyone. Quakes this deep can’t generate a tsunami, either.

That’s great! Did you have to travel there?

Mag 8.3 at a depth of 600km. Tsunamis are usually produced by shallow quakes. Hope that is the case here.

Just checked the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center. No alerts. There has already been a 5.6 aftershock.

Obviously caused by fracking, with a side of global warming

I did. The Mrs did the heavy lifting before and during the process including trying to get out of Russia w.o getting our son vaccinated. We feared his immune system might be compromised and wanted to get him home for a medical evaluation.

Flew into Kamchatka via Anchorage - then to Moscow - -NYC and home. Around the world in eight days. One of the two best things I ever did,

What time did this occur?

N Calif had a 5.7 quake at 8:47 PM PDT yesterday. Just north of Quincy.

Good job. You must have had a real ‘mission accomplished’ feeling when you arrived back home with the boy.

An Internet bud of mine frequently flew into Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (I think that’s where it must have been looking at Google Earth) and from there to various even more remote destinations via Russian MIL helicopters for fly fishing. Each and every trip was an adventure of some kind frequently involving large bears and erupting volcanoes.

As a sad note, he passed away two months ago via Washington State’s assisted suicide law after being diagnosed with Stage 4 something or other cancer. He checked into the Bellingham hospital and we never heard from him again. Sad on many levels. As an additional incidental the bridge collapse on Interstate 5 last night was about 30 miles south of B’ham. As there are very few alternative routes this will greatly affect Seattle-Vancouver transportation and commerce.

But sometimes an earthquake like this just means my replacement has arrived...

Well... now is probably a good time to leave. I'm pretty sure it's going to get really ugly on this planet, very soon.

Hey, when you leave, could you go back to Kenya on August 4, 1961 and let us know what happened there?

This is the best course we could come up with. You don’t want to know the other options.
