Frantic 911 call leads to 3 missing women in Ohio

CLEVELAND (AP) — The woman's voice was frantic and breathless, and she was choking back tears. "Help me. I'm Amanda Berry," she told a 911 dispatcher. "I've been kidnapped and I've been missing for 10 years and I'm, I'm here, I'm free now."

Those words led police to a house near downtown Cleveland where Berry and two other women who vanished a decade ago were found Monday, elating family members and friends who had longed to see them again.

Authorities later arrested three brothers. They released no names and gave no information about them or what charges they might face.

City officials have scheduled a news conference for Tuesday morning.

Police Chief Michael McGrath said he thinks Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight were tied up at the house and held there since they were in their teens or early 20s.

A 6-year-old also was found in the home, but police didn't disclose the child's identity or relationship to anyone in the home. The women appeared to be in good health and were taken to a hospital to be evaluated and be reunited with relatives.

The women's escape and rescue began with a frenzied cry for help.

A neighbor, Charles Ramsey, told WEWS-TV he heard screaming Monday and saw Berry, whom he didn't recognize, at a door that would open only enough to fit a hand through. He said she was trying desperately to get outside and pleaded for help to reach police.

these cases were disissed by the police as mere runaway cases.

Here they are: the Castro brothers rapist/kidnappers.

Still no word on where they were born, citizenship status. This *could* be the death knell for Obama's amnesty if it turns out they would benefit.

It seems that most people here share your opinion. But, personally, I think the dispatcher handled the call well. His tone of voice sounded appropriate, imho. When a 911 operator is asking questions, the police have already been dispatched.

Maybe I come from a high-tension urban jungle but I find no fault in the 911 operator at all.

That's my opinion, too. Maybe because I used to live in high crime areas, too, and have called 911 many times.

I didn’t say it applied to all 911 operators. I said this guy could have done better.

Actually, the 911 operator said: we will send a car as soon as one is free. Never should have said that. As soon as he said that, the gal’s emotions and panic escalated.

I accept that he has to remain calm and motivate her to control herself to say where and what, but when he said that, she almost lost control. And, he could have offered to stay on the line with her until she heard sirens or saw the police car. She had waited over 10 years for this moment, he could have given her 90 seconds more.

Two of the girls were never dismissed as runaways. I don’t know about the first, older gal. And there is another gal missing from 2007 that is classified as an endangered runaway (it is felt she initially ran away, but is now considered in danger).

CNN or MSNBC already found a Castro family member who (uncle?) who was obviously of hispanic descent.

(note the word latino is not being used by the MSM in this case)

I see your point. If 911 tells me, “We’ll send a car as soon as one is free,” I don’t take the comment literally. I assume my request has already been sent to the dispatcher, and now the 911 operator is just following up with questions.

However, a woman held captive for 10 years, beginning at 16, and perhaps making her first 911 call would take his comment literally and might be driven to panic.

seems like the police were playing games with the “definitions” in order to keep the crime stats low.

runaway is not a crime.

UNSOLVED kidnapping hurts their crime statistics.

Does anyone have an update on the legal status of these suspects...

he is no rocket scientist, probably an obama supporter but he gets credit where credit is due. He also did make some comments that will have the PC crowd in instant meltdown.

either way, no amount of Rubio fluff ads is going to save immigration amnesty now.

They had a Puerto Rican flag on the front of the house. I guess they would be considered US citizens of some sort.

I'd say a bad sort.

does not mean anything. I know of situations where illegals claim to be puerto rican and have “lost” their birth certificates.

You can tell by the dialect of the accent IF they speak spanish. (not all puerto rican citizens do)

YUCK!!! Sadly I heard they are Puerto Rican so they are U.S. citizens. Maybe they just flew the flag for a cover. Who knows.

Of course, so it is constructive criticism for this particular guy. It could have been handled better. And I am sure hearing it on the media, he recognizes that.
