Paul Ryan Supports Gay Adoption, But Not Marriage
Roll Call ^ | 4/30/2013 | Meredith Shiner

Former GOP vice presidential nominee Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., now supports the rights of gay Americans to adopt children, though he still believes marriage “is between a man and a woman.”

In a town hall meeting with constituents in Wisconsin on Monday, the House Budget Committee chairman said he has changed his mind on the adoption issue, even though his opinions on other aspects of gay rights have remained unchanged. To date, two Republican senators — Rob Portman of Ohio, who had been in the mix for Mitt Romney’s No. 2 spot, and Mark S. Kirk of Illinois — have come out in support of gay marriage.

“Adoption, I’d vote differently these days. That was I think a vote I took in my first term, 1999 or 2000. I do believe that if there are children who are orphans who do not have a loving person or couple, I think if a person wants to love and raise a child they ought to be able to do that. Period,” Ryan said in a video posted by the liberal website Think Progress. “I would vote that way. I do believe marriage is between a man and a woman, we just respectfully disagree on that issue.”

Ryan’s move to support gay adoption is a particularly interesting one, given his continued national ambitions and Portman’s reversal on gay marriage. Portman announced in March that his college-aged son, Will, is gay and that he could no longer oppose marriage equality.

In the past, Ryan has opposed almost every equality measure, getting a “0″ on the Human Rights Campaign’s most recent Congressional scorecard. He opposed the repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell,” supported the Defense of Marriage Act and voted against the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Protection Act, which expanded federal hate crime laws to protect the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

In his remarks Monday, Ryan said he has “always supported” civil unions. Though there is no evidence to support that, it’s a clear sign that the politics of the issue have changed and that even the most conservative Republicans need to appear more hospitable to gays and lesbians in order to expand their voting bloc.

“I’ve always supported things like civil unions where you ought to be granted certain legal privileges to be able to have benefits whether it’s estate planning benefits or visitation and things like that,” Ryan said.

But a story published by The Advocate, a gay and lesbian news magazine, when Romney named Ryan to his ticket, noted that Ryan supported a Wisconsin-based ban on gay marriage and civil unions in 2006.

“Reviews of Ryan’s record indicate that he has voted overwhelmingly against LGBT rights. He voted twice for the federal constitutional amendment against same-sex marriage, and supported the ban on same-sex marriage and civil unions approved by Wisconsin voters in 2006. Ryan voted against “don’t ask, don’t tell” repeal and hate crimes legislation, but he voted for the Employment Non-discrimination Act in 2007, when it included protections for sexual orientation but not gender identity,” the report said.

Are you freaking serious with that question?? Lemmie refresh your memory

So Norm you’re ok with Obama taking away your civil liberties. You’re ok with Obama and Holder flying drones and taking away your guns. You’re ok with ObamaCare.

Do really want to post that on FR ?:”

Ring a bell? Don’t like turnabout huh? I see why.

I agree with you, Mike. I myself have not adopted a child (I have 3). There is actually an orphanage close by, and the kids there who are asking for “forever families” are heartbreaking. A couple I know from Idaho, both women, both gay, were foster parents of two little boys whose mother put their hands on the burners. So the alternative is....? back to the mom? Back to a mother who is going to have a stepdad or live in boyfriend to abuse the kids some more?

“Giving his support to Two Daddies and Two Mommies parentage?? Are you agreeing with THAT??”

I don’t advocate it for sure.... but IF the alternative is nothing then how could any sane person deny another human being a nurturing home.... Alot of folks buy into the stereotype of the parades, that homos are raging perverts and that they will abuse the kids or sway the kid - I hate to use those generalizations because we see a lot of perverted heteros too.

If the alternative is a juvenile home, which means that the odds of the kid turning bad are greater what would you have?

I’ve been posting on the topic since 2002. I know the facts.

Do your own research. If I find myeslf with an empty hour sometime in the next day, I’ll post links. If you don’t know that stuff already, you are either very young, very ignorant, or “none so blind as he who does not wish to see”. The below alone is enough reason why homosexuals should not only never be permitted to foster or adopt children, but should be denied any job where they have contact with children up to adolescents.

And just because I’m nice, here’s one link:

“It’s better to have Obama taking away our liberties so that the democrats get the back lash, than to have Republicans taking away our liberties.”

Yeah that argument doesn’t work... the last election is proof.

There is no backlash, because like the dems over 10 years ago the Republicans find themselves splintered from within. It’s a great political strategy if you can swing it, and they can.

No Republican in office is right on every issue with every person, it just can’t happen. Forums give voice to everyone which means even the extreme right can disenfranchise the base. So we get social conservatives who put morals in front of security and the constitution. I’d rather have some one protect my rights and secure my nation - then we can talk about the other stuff.

I just checked your posting history and you’ve been pushing the homo agenda here for some time.

(I’m not in a tolerant mood a-tall.)

“No mikey, most of us disagree with you and are against homosexuals adopting children.”

Annie I’m not sure... I think you like to talk alot and I see alot of comments but only one that I would call data base or credible - and guess what - it wasn’t from you.... :)

“The idea that children are better off adopted by “anything”, than they would be if not adopted is illogical. It suggests that nothing is worse than a children’s home or a foster arrangement.”

I think I capitalized the word “IF” a couple of times. Which is what I understood Ryan was saying. Your perception is that there is alaways an alternative.... which I would hope as well.

Always is. How they do rage when anyone questions the holy homosexuals.

If I wasn’t fragged from dealing with a principles don’t matter devotee I’d be on this like ...a homo on a boy scout? Nah that was too easy...

Exactly. And at this point I don’t anyone the benefit of the doubt that they just don’t know how bad it is for children. Anyone who thinks it’s okay to put children in a home with homosexuals is on the Dark Side. Wilfully so.

LOL Norm you’re killing me here.

So you are ok with Obama and his cronies controlling the government as long as we “show the Republicans” by not voting for them ?

I haven’t done any pinging in a while since I’ve been just way too busy... And I don’t like to “ping and run”. If I’m going to ping I like to take the time to slam the idiots.

I’m so intolerant now and getting even worse.

It’s a good think I’m not in the same room with some of these people, with a baseball bat.

Bingo - the alternative is much worse... and it is very sad.

considering I’m talking to a guy cool with handing children over for sexual sacrifice, all I can honestly say to you is GFY.

Tired of dealing with abject libs today.
