Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah-3rd District) had serious questions for DHS representatives on Thursday. Fox News reports:
Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz said Thursday that the Department of Homeland Security is using roughly 1,000 rounds of ammunition more per person than the U.S. Army, as he and other lawmakers sharply questioned DHS officials on their massive bullet buys.
It is entirely inexplicable why the Department of Homeland Security needs so much ammunition, Chaffetz, R-Utah, said at a hearing.
The hearing itself was unusual, as questions about the departments ammunition purchases until recently had bubbled largely under the radar on blogs and in the occasional news article. But as the Department of Homeland Security found itself publicly defending the purchases, lawmakers gradually showed more interest in the issue.
Chaffetz questions were about waste and accountability. He was able to structure a solid line of questioning based upon the fact that DHS is requiring 1000 more rounds per agent than the United States Army requires for one of its soldiers:
Chaffetz, who chairs one of the House oversight subcommittees holding the hearing Thursday, revealed that the department currently has more than 260 million rounds in stock. He said the department bought more than 103 million rounds in 2012 and used 116 million that same year among roughly 70,000 agents.
Comparing that with the small-arms purchases procured by the U.S. Army, he said the DHS is churning through between 1,300 and 1,600 rounds per officer, while the U.S. Army goes through roughly 350 rounds per soldier.
He noted that is roughly 1,000 rounds more per person.
Their officers use what seems to be an exorbitant amount of ammunition, he said.

The people and the government are both arming up in preparation for an armed conflict between the two.
US ammo makers sell to those that want us dead.
Always remember this.
In a few years the government will say they lost it all in a boating accident.
Bush created a monster when he created the DHS.
Imagine a heavily armed, massive, expensive top-down Gov’t bureaucracy state-security apparatus with a political agenda.
Give it time to develop and expand its “mission” as all bureaucracies do, and in 15-20 years, you will know what I mean.
Obama’s “civilian defense force”?
DUH.
They’re bad shots.
Congress needs to defund DHS and tell DHS to fund itself by selling amo.
I have a feeling that the Army ammunition usage cited is across literally every single member of the US army (only a small fraction of which are small-arms toting infantrymen) so it’s distorted by tens of thousands of REMFs, aviation guys, tankers, and other specialists who do very, very little small arms practice.
Agree it’s a monster but Bush didn’t see it coming. He proved his bonafides in protecting the homeland but it wasn’t because of the DHS that he was successful, and he knows it. And if you recall, Democrats were the most keen on doing this and that the TSA for instance have government employees as screeners. That it not be contracted out. Bottom line is they wanted more government union members and dues.
Now the Obama regime is using this in a way Bush didn’t foresee. But Bush will never say a word about current presidential policies and issues just like 41 didn’t. It’s a family code you don’t break, once out of presidential office.
I don’t think they’re necessarily arming up as much as they are trying to corner the market on ammo in an effort to deny it to gun owners.
The record speaks for itself. This administration has used every tool in the book to try and get to gun owners.
GE Capital not lending to gun related industries and now publicly admitting it.
Bank of America terminating accounts of gun businesses.
The list is endless and endlessly diffuse. It is all happening just below the surface so that anyone who calls attention to it for what it really is can easily be marginalized as a kooky conspiratorialist.
It is real.
There is a parade in Detroit. Two Islamic yoots on welfare blow up the route and people are killed and wounded. The entire US and federal law enforcement aparatus goes full scale operations to nab the bombers who fled to hide in Dearborn Michigan. The locals and feds start that door to door crap in Dearborn like they did in Boston..........Except three of five homes happen to be the followers of Muhammad, and immigrated here from the middle east.
Welcome to our own little Bosnia / Serbia pressure cooker.
How many Department of Homeland Security employees need to spend even one round of ammo in their entire career?
I'll bet more time has been spend investigating the political opponents of Obama (Republicans, conservatives, and Tea Party members) than time spent on radical Muslims.
The bigger the government, the smaller the citizen and his/her ammo supply.
Granted, they do Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the U.S. Secret Service.
Even given that, how many of these 70,000 are pencil pushers whose biggest threat of being directly confronted with any illegal activity is eating something from Krispy Kreme that has improper nutritional labeling?
DHS bought a ton of Ammo, Probably, becaus they know there is going to be a limit on the amount each legal Citizen will be able to buy..
There is nothing Sacred to the OAF in the White House.
I think the firearm manufacturers have more clout than ammunition manufacturers. They’ll probably see their taxes magically double, or triple if they refuse to sell to the government.
> In a few years the government will say they lost it all in a boating accident.
And it will show up in the arsenals of drug gangs and al Qaeda-linked Muslim Brotherhood. Fast, Furious & Fatal.
