Excerpt only snips:
Would you still make your weekly or monthly shopping trip to the United States if you had to pay an additional fee each time you crossed a land border by car or bus?
"Given this, I was shocked to see that the Fiscal Year 2014 budget request proposed a study for a new toll on all passengers and pedestrians crossing the border from Canada into the United States. Putting up economic barriers to regional commerce is the absolute last thing we should be doing to grow the Western New York economy."

If we did that at the southern border we’d go a long way toward the national debt.
BTW the proposed is an ignorant idea.

All money rightfully belongs to government.
Any money the peasants have, they have because of the generosity of government, and they should be grateful for any crumbs government leaves in their pockets.

How about a ‘crossing fee’ for every Mexican that enters this country.....say $5000 for a start.

Fill your boots. The only reason I’ve been to the States in the past 10 years is to embark on a cruise. Make it more difficult for Canadians to come to the US and you will just be hurting yourselves. Your government is suicidal.

BTW the proposed is an ignorant idea.
If it were up to me, I'd make border cities duty free cities. Revenue lost would more than be made up through job creation and resulting consumer buying.

"Fill your boots." Is that a Canadian colloquialism?
Is it roughly equivalent to "Up yours?"

Would you still make your weekly or monthly shopping trip to the United States if you had to pay an additional fee each time you crossed a land border by car or bus?As I understand it, Canadians already have to pay a tax on anything they bring into the country from the US. So that means they get socked coming and going.
Smart idea, comrades. /s

NAFTA and other similar agreements may prohibit doing this....this would be a restraint on trade
I can’t believe I said something nice about NAFTA

Maybe not. NAFTA is probably the reason why this proposal can only apply to passengers and pedestrians.
