Senate rejects background checks on gun purchases in 54-46 vote
Hill [Washington ^ | Alexander Bolton

Posted on 04/17/2013 1:52:45 PM PDT by Nachum

The Senate delivered a devastating blow to President Obama’s agenda to regulate guns Wednesday by defeating a bipartisan proposal to expand background checks. It failed by a vote of 54 to 46, with 5 Democrats voting against it. Only 4 Republicans supported it. Democratic Sens. Mark Pryor (Ark.), Max Baucus (Mont.), Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.), Mark Begich (Alaska) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nev.) voted against it. Reid supported the measure but voted against it to preserve his ability to bring the measure up again. GOP Sens. John McCain (Ariz.), Susan Collins (Maine), Pat Toomey (Pa.) and Mark Kirk

We know Collins and Mclame are exiting anyway - but this should pretty-much end the political career of Toomey.

RE: Harry Reid voted against it.

This guy is such a blowhard.

Just a while ago, before the voting started, he said this:

“Voting To Save Lives Is ‘More Important Than Preventing Imagined Tyranny’”

SEE HERE:

Apparently he is against background checks but not against the ban on assault weapons...

Actually 55, as Dingy Harry voted against it only to retain the right to bring it back up later.

He voted against it in an attempt to save his NRA rating.

I’ve written SEVERAL strongly-worded letters to the NRA in recent weeks explaining that if this guy maintains an A-rating by their standards, then they are not an organization I wish to support. Reid is a wolf in sheep’s clothing, it’s VERY obvious to see that.

The NRA gets up to $1,000 from me every year. That’ll be cut back to $0.00 if they let these traitors ride in the ratings.

Haha... Now when the Republicans amendments come up and the Rats kill it, it will be the Rats who killed the gun grab bill.

Everyone knew this was going to happen. It will fade quietly into the memory hole by the media.

Not to worry they’ll be back with their point.08 solution which will generate big money and aid in creating “offenders” felons if their caught again.

how does that work, exactly ? any help in an explanation appreciated.

Under Senate rules, someone who was on the winning side of a vote can later move to have that vote reconsidered. Someone on the losing side cannot ask for reconsideration. Hence Reid's tactical vote against, so he can bring the bill up again if he thinks enough votes have shifted to pass it.

It would be interesting to know if more than five Senators actually read the bill.

President Obama is just on the wrong side of history. Only 4% of the public think gun control is important and historical data shows with all the bureaucracy and gun control nonsense that they are not doing much better than was being done in the 1920s. This gun control nonsense is like so many leftist bailiwicks where they offer false solutions that don’t address problems and instead just make an industry out of limiting liberties of those who aren’t criminals.
