Skip to comments.HARRY REID: Voting To Save Lives Is 'More Important Than Preventing Imagined Tyranny'
Posted on 04/17/2013 7:28:51 AM PDT by SeekAndFind
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Wednesday that he would support a new ban on assault weapons as an amendment to pending gun control legislation.
""I will vote for Dianne Feinstein's assault weapons ban," Reid said in an impassioned speech on the Senate floor.
"I will vote for assault weapons ban because maintaining law and order and saving lives is more important than preventing imagined tyranny."
"Today I choose to vote my conscience, not only as Harry Reid, a United States Senator, but also as a husband, a father, a grandfather, and I hope a friend to lots and lots of people," Reid concluded.
Reid's support for a new assault weapons ban marks a final break between the Nevada Democrat and the National Rifle Association, with whom he has previously enjoyed a relatively warm relationship.
Until recently, Reid's campaign website even featured an endorsement from NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre that expressly praised Reid for opposing a new assault weapons ban.

“maintaining law and order and saving lives is more important than preventing imagined tyranny.”
Said it right there, you little commie SOB.
Yes, and when it fails he will be unable to bring it up again since he would be on the losing side of the vote, unless he changes his vote at the last second.
If the NRA didn't see this coming then they're dumber than a box of 0bama voters.
saving lives is more important than preventing imagined tyranny.”
Since when has a card carrying member of the Death Cult been worried about saving lives? Never.
Harry, there’s a nursing home somewhere with your name on it.
GUNS SAVE LIVES!
Hey Harry, preventing tyranny saves lives.
Just ask the millions killed by their own goverment throughout the 20th century.
No. It isn’t.
Especially since you will have to send men with GUNS to try to kill me to take my GUNS away.
How does that protect anyone? All you have to do is LEAVE ME ALONE to save those lives.
Shall we add of the lives lost to tyranny and compare?
It has always been my experience that when someone tells you, you are imagining things, you are often so close to the truth as to take the hammer and hit the nail on the head.
If Dingy Harry had actually voted his conscience, no vote would have been cast...
Guns save lives.
Says it all.
Harry, theres a nursing home somewhere with your name on it.
You are too kind, I was thinking more along the lines of a long term Alzheimer’s facility.
“and your obligation to NEVER appear like you want to create a tyranny, outweighs EVERY design and plan you may want to try”
Americans have never before sensed, in such numbers, that the nation is literally turning into an authoritarian security state. YOU are creating that belief with your actions.
“Slavery is freedom”
It seems like the NRA and the TEA Party are the only two refuges from jackasses like this. The Repub Party is useless . . . full of RINOs and defanged TEA Party representatives sent by us to Washington who’ve become voiceless, useless, and spineless.
Never forget: This is the same idiot who says paying Federal incomes taxes is “voluntary”.
While I’m not positive, I think I’ve seen single-cell organisms with more intelligence that this clown. Why do the people of NV keep this guy in office?
Dens are already saying if you want to be save from bombings like in Boston you must give up your rights
Let us all remember that Arlen Specter would have been with Reid, Charlie Crist would have been with Reid, Richard Lugar would have been with Reid, Mike Castle would have been with Reid, Scott Brown would have been with Reid, Olympia Snowe would have been with Reid, Bob Bennett would have been with Reid, George Voinovich would have been with Reid, Judd Gregg would have been with Reid.
The democrats are struggling for votes because of the number of senators that have been removed or replaced over the last couple of cycles. And another cycle is coming up, when we can remove and replace more. Chambliss and Johanns are already leaving, Collins, Graham, Alexander, Enzi, Cochrane, Cornyn, and McConnell have proved unreliable.
The vast majority of colonists in America accepted the edicts of the British government, but a small group of men who wanted freedom would not settle for living their lives under what they saw as tyranny. We all know the rest of the story....as does that worm, Harry Reid.
Shame on you voters in NV. The man who represents you is unfit for the job.
“It has always been my experience that when someone tells you, you are imagining things, you are often so close to the truth as to take the hammer and hit the nail on the head.”
You are too kind, I was thinking more along the lines of a long term Alzheimers facility.
I think we are both to kind. A trailer with no air conditioning out in the middle of the desert would be more fitting. Start partying when we see the vultures begin to circle.
Reid belongs in a prison cell.
Crooked land deals, corruption, etc. He’s a scum bag.
Spoken like a true tyrant Harry.
Heck, he is part of the tyranny! The only way we protect our liberty is with force. You don't think the fact 200 million guns are in this country isn't a factor in our stability! What is the first thing a dictator does - shut the presses, take the guns. Little tougher here - although one could argue they own most of the networks.
Of course, no one mentions that the background check (at gun shows and internet only) part of the bill is fairly benign; the real issue is the retention of the background check information. This aspect is the slippery slope toward gun registration. That is the issue; not background checks at gun shows. But, even that can't get passed.
Yes, Harry, but someimes imagined tyranny... can come true--
That is so... true.
100% NRA rating?
“...I choose to vote my conscience, not only as Harry Reid, a United States Senator, but also as a husband, a father, a grandfather, and I hope a friend to lots and lots of people,”
I see. It’s more important for you to vote along with your terribly misguided, socialist colleagues than honor your solemn pledge to defend our Constitution.
One of the best reasons to move to Nevada is to be able to vote AGAINST this A-Hole.
All the lefties need to be asked - what is it that you want to do after confiscation that you can’t do before confiscation?
Swore an oath to uphold the Constitution. Trashes it every chance he gets.
And what is it that tyrants excel at doing once they consolidate power?
“Imagined tyranny” will soon be cause for a Government psychological evaluation under obamacare. It will soon be a question on the ATF Form 4473.
Do you now or have you ever had imagined tyranny? Yes...No...
Dingy knows better than most that it is not imagined, it is real.
Thus speaks a man that would be a dictator.
Sure, Harry, tyranny is only "imagined" if you and your cronies are the tyrants!
I'm sure he'd tell you that Obamacare will save lives too.
The lives saved are imaginary, also.
He’s there thanks to the unions in vegas. Not many in the rest of the state (overwhelmed by the vegas population) have any use for hairy screed. And it appears that dean heller, who just barely got past shelley berzerkly, isn’t doing a stellar job. He’s gotten hammered by his constituents. The ever affable hairy has 4 more years and heller just started his term.
“Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.”
Guns save lives.
Says it all.
If they did not save lives, the police would not carry them.
Has anyone ever asked Harry Reid how this bill would have prevented the Newtown massacre?
"Certainly one of the chief guarantees of freedom under any government, no matter how popular and respected, is the right of citizens to keep and bear arms. This is not to say that firearms should not be very carefully used, and that definite safety rules of precaution should not be taught and enforced. But the right of citizens to bear arms is just one more guarantee against arbitrary government, one more safeguard against tyranny which now appears remote in America, but which historically has proved to be always possible."
-- Senator Hubert H. Humphrey (D) Minn., "Know Your Lawmakers" Guns (magazine), February, 1960, p. 4.
Ugly can be managed. Stupid is forever.
I received this message from Rand Paul.
Please join me and put the pressure on....
“I’m not going to beat around the bush.
It’s absolutely critical you call BOTH your U.S. Senators and tell them to vote NO on any gun control scheme — especially the Toomey/Manchin bill — IMMEDIATELY.
Starting at 4:00 P.M. today, the Senate will begin voting on a series of anti-gun amendments Senate Majority Leader Reid is bringing to the floor.
Among them are the Feinstein Gun Ban, a magazine ban amendment and numerous other schemes.
But tops on the list is the Manchin/Toomey “Background Check” (National Gun Registration Bill).
The vote on this so-called “compromise bill” could come down to just one or two votes.
And your pressure can make all the difference.
Many or my colleagues are getting pressure from all different directions.
Anti-gun groups are running hard-hitting TV ads. The Obama White House is working to twist arms, as well.
But if you can turn up the heat on your U.S. Senators, you can make sure they know you and I are 100% serious about stopping their gun grabs in in their tracks.
Time is running out.
So it’s critical you act IMMEDIATELY.
Please call BOTH your Senators at once and tell them to vote no on any new gun control scheme — especially the Toomey/Manchin Bill.
This fight will depend on YOU.”
“Voluntary” is what they taught in my income tax classes in college. That was awhile back; don’t know if they still teach it as it was a source of laughter.
You, sir, are an enabler.
Yes, you “volunteer” to pay, and they “volunteer” to not seize everything you own and jail your sorry arse.
