Three Democratic governors who successfully pushed their state legislatures to toughen gun laws are asking Congress to do the same.
We need the federal government to take the lead and enact reasonable laws to reduce gun violence by, at a minimum, ensuring that more gun purchasers pass a federal background check, Govs. Andrew Cuomo of New York, Martin OMalley of Maryland and Dan Malloy of Connecticut wrote in a letter to Senators on Wednesday. The American people are clear on this issue more than 90% support background checks prior to gun purchases. They understand that if you cant pass a background check, you should not be able to buy a gun. We stand with them, and urge you to do the same. Continue Reading
The letter comes just hours before the Senate is expected to defeat a compromise to expand background checks crafted by Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.). That compromise would cover online sales and sales at gun shows, but not private, person-to-person transfers. The governors letter says the compromise falls short of a goal for universal background checks, but is a first step to address gun violence in our communities and honor the victims.

OMalley, Cuomo and Malloy have all pushed their states to adopt tough new gun laws that go far beyond what the federal government is considering. Marylands law, for instance, includes a ban of 45 types of assault weapons and requires gun owners to hand over their fingerprints to get a gun license. The NRA has said it plans to challenge the law in court.
But all three governors said state laws alone can not protect Americans.
Gun violence respects no borders, and our states laws alone are insufficient to systemically address gun violence on a national basis, the trio wrote. Without federal action, our citizens are only as safe as the state with the weakest gun laws.
RINO Christie will add his name to the list before long.
I wonder if obama could pass a background test...
Sure, we do... tell me how this idiotic bill does any of that?
how true—why have people been getting all orgasmic over Christie? Don’t understand it.
Logic dictates that criminals will not submit to a background check. Either Democrats are hopelessly naive, or they have ulterior motives. My money’s on the later.
And our Densa VP will be presiding in the Senate over the votes.
Three Baby Ruths floating in the punch bowl.
Good question
Dont understand it.
I don't understnd it either.
Awwwww Little Mario and Clownshoes O’Malley are starting to get worried that without federal cover, their new gun laws will destroy their presidential ambitions.
O’Malley is a raging moron who should have known this would happen. His predecessor, the clueless Parris Glendenning thought passing strict gun control would be a golden ticket into the Gore administration. And where is he now? He’s an angry, bitter lobbyist for a tiny little firm that lobbies for farmers. And now O’Malley sees the same thing is going to happen to him, poor little feller.
Anyone know what Republican governors are doing?
