As Evangelical Leaders Change Views on Immigration, Congregations Follow

ORLANDO, Fla. — In the pews of the First Baptist Church of Orlando, where thousands of evangelical Christians gather on Sundays to worship and sing, a change of heart is happening on the once toxic issue of immigration. Two years ago, national evangelical leaders began to speak out in favor of legislation to give legal status to immigrants in the United States illegally. Now, as Congress is about to start a debate on overhauling the immigration system, conservative Christians in those churches, once inclined to take a hard line on immigrants they viewed as lawbreakers, are consulting their Bibles and coming around to the pastors’ view.

“I feel I would be representative of a typical longtime Baptist, one who grew up in the Baptist Church, who was raised in an evangelical family, and I would identify myself as a conservative Republican,” said Jay Crenshaw, 36, a lawyer in Orlando who attended a service at the megachurch last Sunday. “And I can tell you how much my views have changed.”

Mr. Crenshaw said his views started to shift when his Colombian friend, a white-collar professional who had been living in Florida for years, asked for help after being arrested for driving without a license. Mr. Crenshaw said he realized that his friend, an active church member who was supporting his mother and a brother, could be deported because of the traffic offense. ..You notice the Pastor thinks there should be driver licenses for illegals so that they can drive to jobs they can't legally work. He does not say anything about what documents were used to get this job ? Illegals come to enjoy the freedom and prosperity of an orderly society and immediately set out to destroy the very rules that made this an enviable and orderly society.

Too bad leaders don’t listen to United States Citizens when it comes to these extra constitutional unlawful cases. There are consequences to the crimes that are perpetrated.

The spread of lawlessness is just the start.

What utter castrated wimps these imbecile leaders are, to not protect and defend those for whom they work.

They should read the Gospel wherein Jesus says He vomits our the lukewarm.

THis country is preserved and founded for freedom which is protected by our laws.

This guy disgusts me.

Blechh!

Where does the Bible say that if you are here illegally, trying to steal the privilege of citizenship, you deserve to be rewarded for your crime? What Bible says that?

That article’s reminiscent of a description for a person’s embrace of the inevitability of death during the final moments of life.

or:

America is dying. The obamanation is upon us. Deal with it.

We had a chance to deal properly with this problem back in the 1980s when numbers of illegals were around 3 million. With at least 20 million illegals bedding down in America now, the window of opportunity has closed. Now it’s just a matter of managing the decline of this once-great country.

Illegals come to enjoy the freedom and prosperity of an orderly society and immediately set out to destroy the very rules that made this an enviable and orderly society.

By definition when 'illegals' cross over without permission they've broken our laws.

What on earth would make people think illegals would respect any of our other laws? If we must take in millions of Mexicans, fine. Send the illegals home and bring in some of the millions who will willing to play by the rules. Trust me, they'll be MUCH better citizens.

“Where does the Bible say that if you are here illegally, trying to steal the privilege of citizenship, you deserve to be rewarded for your crime? What Bible says that?”

Actually if I remember right then when the Jews came out of Egypt they were warned not to mix with the foreigners in the area because it would cause them to worship other gods and customs. The Jews ignored that warning to their own perl.

Like wise when you flood the American culture with so many different cultures and religions at a rate that is so overwhelming then you destroy all that was America.

It is different than when you take immigrants at a slow rate and require them to learn and live mostly by your culture and not theirs. If they want to live in their culture then they have no business coming here. No more than I have any business going to their country and asking them to change for me.

Multiculturalism is a very destructive process to any culture that embraces it. Which is why it is being pushed. Because it is destroying the West.

This is part of the plan from long ago put forth by the communists to bring down the west without firing a shot. That rate at which that plan has been put into effect is now accelerating at break neck speed.

Real Christians do not support Illegal Alien Amnesty.

Illegal Aliens steal from you when they illegally enter...take jobs from Americans...and take government money.... while breaking the law

First Baptist is one of the biggest and most influential churches in Orlando, although this link to Amnesty will not help them

I can tell you that the Catechism which interprets the Bible, among other sources, states that it is immoral to give resources to aliens as it is imprudent, economically destructive and it wastes resources to the extent that it will destroy the very country that provides freedom of religion.

The USCCB, the American Bishops group, seem to be off, on their catechism.

I’m sure the Bible, then, does not advise allowing and enabling an invasion of users.

Back in 2005 and 2006 there were quite a few Freepers who would have approved the sentiments of Mr. Crenshaw. Indeed those who called the invaders for what they were and are were routinely called racists and anti-Christian right here and not by jackasses like Dane or Zook (who I suspected was a Hong Kong Chinese plant) with a vested material interest in having cheap labor. Either a lot of these people are now just silent here or they have left for good. I don't know which but there are virtually no ‘pity the poor damp American. They are just good folks who happen to speak Spanish’ posts any more. I like to think that a lot of folks here have been mugged by reality but i am not sure.
