So only the clinically depressed who don’t seek treatment can have firearms?

One way or another. That "doc" has intentionally chosen the most severe betrayal that a psychiatrist can commit, and patients would have to be crazy (and stupid) to trust him ever again. I hope his name and business address are publicized, that decent people picket his place of business and warn potential patients, and that he will be forced out of business even before the courts take him to the cleaners over this disgusting breach of privacy. If I had been the victim, I would devote at least 12 hours a day to permanently ruining his professional career - I hope the actual victim and his friends can afford to do the same.

This, of course, is the problem. Sadly, Freepers over the last 10 years think that anyone on an anti-depressant is a total freak to be avoided.

Have we heard what the murdering kid and his rotten mom were on?!

The problem we are going to have, or already have, is, some antidepressants are used in small doses for other problems. I take a small amount of amitriptylene every night because I have fibromyalgia and this small amount stops nerves from over firing and causing muscle spasms. It is an accepted treatment for that. It takes a much larger amount to be used for an antidepressant and it is seldom used for that anymore as new medicines for that are preferred.

So, it's going to be up to the person or persons or committee or whatever, to determine what dose of medicine actually makes a person incapable of having a firearm. I expect it to be if a medicine bottle of “x”, no matter the strength and dose, is in the house, you don't get a gun. And, maybe your spouse doesn't either, as he/she MIGHT take one of the pills as they are in the house.

And, what to keep the jackboots from getting a search warrant and going through your medicine cabinet, looking for “x” and “x” and “x” and on and on. Maybe you have a few pills in a bottle that you took twenty years ago and the bottle is still there - they take the bottle and your gun.

They made this guy turn in his guns - if I lived in New York State or Conn., or New Jersey, or et., etc., state, I would be out of there. I hope none of this crap is ever allowed in Texas.

Regardless of any Rx that anyone is taking this is a first to take away someone’s 2nd Amendment rights based on the premise of mental health issues without the due process of being adjudicated mentally incompetent in a court of law with the benefit of counsel. This is an outrage.

I think we have passed into a time when we have no rights to due process - certainly New York is a totalitarian “country” of its own now. They now own those citizens. Insurrection of some kind will have to happen before they get their freedom back.

Glen Beck was listing the drugs on his radio program today. On this list is the drug Ambien....a sleep aid. I’m sure 100’s of 1,000’s of New Yorkers are taking this drug. It’s one of the most popular sleeping pills on the market.

I believe that in my own state -- Washington -- that this would violate the state's own constitution. The state sets a pretty high bar for involuntary commitment and/or loss of 2nd amendment rights.

I agree. The rule of law is essentially dead in this country. What remains is a pretense, a Banana Republic of America.

It doesn’t matter what Rx drugs you are taking or have been prescribed. You might have been diagnosed schizophrenic and be taking lithium. You have to be adjudicated mentally incompetent in a court of law before any of your Constitutionally protected rights can be restricted by law. Until now apparently.
