No known history of diabetes in my family, but my son developed Type 1 when he was 16. Athlete, very healthy, played in the dirt when he was little. He did have his mother’s allergies though. He was very allergic to dogs, cats and horses.
The reasons for the sharp increase remain a medical mystery...
Global warming! This proves it once and for all! See? Gore was right, and what's more, we just found some more votes in Florida for him, so kick George W. Bush out of the White House!
Hello? Anybody there? Where'd everybody go?
Yep
Wheat with 48 chromosomes instead of the original 18?
Antoine Béchamp seems to have been more correct than Louis Pasteur.
Enigma? There is sugar in almost everything. There is sugar in lunch meat.
I was buying some food at Walmart and picked up a steak. I happed to see a small lable on the back that said “Ingredients”.<p<
Ingredients?? Yes, ingredients. The first one being beef. The rest were ‘enhancements’. Ah yes, better living through chemistry.
“High fructose corn syrup?”
I’m with you guys. Ate that crap for DECADES not knowing any better, but like Trans Fats, I’m done with HFCS. If it says anything other than Sugar or Glucose on the label, they can keep it.
I started cutting my consumption of HFCS several years ago (hard to do because it’s in almost everything) and lost 35 pounds without any other change in my diet.
Exactly.
Hey! Let’s subsidize corn growers.
Oops, we have too much corn now, how did that happen?
Oh, well, let’s make it into something we can use.
I know, let’s make a sweetener out of it and put it in every food we have.
What? People are getting fat and have diabetes?
We’ll have to address that with laws, like... I KNOW! Let’s ban sodas larger than 16 oz!
With all this talk about diet on this thread, folks need to remember the differences between Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes.
Type 2 is generally caused by an overload to the system. Your body is pumping out so much insulin to counteract sugar that it becomes tolerant. The pills that Type2’s take are to reduce that tolerance. When that doesn’t work, they have to resort to insulin shots. Most Type2’s got the problem due to diet, weight, old age (many times all 3).
Type 1, which is what I have had for over a decade and was described in the article, doesn’t have much at all to do with diet. As the article mentions, we really don’t know at all what triggers it. All we do know is that most who have it, also have relatives who have it so there probably is a genetic factor involved. The triggers are anyone’s guess. The closest guess for myself when I got it was likely high stress levels. I got it my senior year of college.
ding ding ding...i think we have a winner.
But, three weeks after the event, he finally realized it is "for the rest of his life".
God can remove anything, and we are praying for this to happen with him. In the meantime, we are seeking solutions in other ways. His diet is changing drastically, and HFCS was the first to go!!!
Interesting theory. I was diagnosed Type 1 at 39. Not overweight; not a great diet, but not terrible; not in great shape, but not horrible. History of Type 2 in the family, but not Type 1. But, it was during our busiest season at work. Of course, I had been losing weight for a month and a half, which dates the onset towards the very first of our busy time, but stress could still have been involved with me, too.
