Elections have consequences.
I won't say what military base I work at,but today my office was briefed about the impending sequestration. There were a few interesting points to come out of the meeting.
1. You have to take at least 8 hours a week LWOP (leave without pay). You cannot use sick or annual leave on those days off. You cannot take more then 30 hours a week because then you'd be able to apply for unemployment and the federal government is ensuring we can't utilize that avenue to supplement our income. So they take us but prevent us from taking from them. Smart.....
2. No more credit time, comp time, or overtime. If, in the performance of your job you're responsible for monitoring contractors, those contractors have to leave or you leave them unsupervised. Just imagine the legal entanglements that are soon to arise.
3. We have to take 176 hours, or 22 days, off with no pay (which we will NOT get back for all you who have been saying otherwise) between April 25 and September 22. If the sequester lasts longer and we end up taking more than 30 days of sequester then mandatory RIFs will take place and people will start losing their jobs.
That's the news as I have it now. I'll post more as it comes available. I'm going to bed, I can hardly keep my eyes open but I had to post this for all to see.
Read my comments. I said a budget cut of 2.5% does not mean a 20% cut in pay. This is a scare tactic to force you to demand tax increases.
You must not be very old because last time this happened, and every time before that, congress always paid later.
If this wasn’t a scare tactic they would RIF not temporarily
Make you take a 20% pay cut.
Government workers don't pay taxes so they didn't get an increase...
That changed over 25 years ago.
we can go back and forth all day long:

I will reiterate once again. I am for cutting the budget and decreasing the deficit, as are many of my co-workers. Although it has personal impact, hopefully it will not hurt the mission. We worry about paying our bills but also about those we (as a nation) must not abandon in faraway lands.
There is huge bloat in the government, and they have a tendency to recklessly spend money (collected from you and I) to fund all their pet projects, impress their constituents, and payback political favors. Technically they have no limits. They just steal more from us and redistribute it. It must stop!
thanks.
Don’t forget those folks we support. Unlike many of them, I get to go home every night and nobody is shooting at me (probably couldn’t say that if i lived in Chicago, LA or DC).
i hope your industry turns around and you realize profits and security again. But, as long as we compete with the government for control or distribution of funds, I fear it will only get worse.

No federal employee hired after 1984 is covered by CSRS, including congress. They are covered by FERS and pay full SS and medicare, as well as federal, state, and local taxes. They also contribute to a 401K (with matching funds), similar to most private industry. Only those that were hired prior to 1984 and are still around are CSRS. CSRS employees do not pay SS (and are not eligible to collect), they contribute 7% of pay to the retirement fund, and pay full medicare tax (1.3%?). No doubt, CSRS is/was a great plan but long gone for anyone hired in the last 30 years. But it is probably not as good as some union plans were or that some teacher plans are now (which are also taxpayer funded for the most part).
BTW, regardless of your position or opinion, this is a great thread. Good opportunity to express ideas, opinions, and either refute or provide accurate information.
Good point.
Yes, those not working for the government (the private sector) pay the taxes.
The government just takes a portion of my salary (provided by the private sector) and puts it back into the treasury tax account, social security and medicare.
Can't argue with facts.
“I worked hard to avoid this cliff. I negotiated with the Republicans for seven minutes! Seven Minutes! These historic negotiations went nowhere due to the intransigence of their ideological opposition to unsigned blank checks.” - Obama
You are an $$$.
The mission? The federal government needs about a thousand less missions.
And may I say it was good of you to bring up the various budget offices in all impacted agencies of our government!
They seem to believe their primary job is to prevent losses of ever increasing funds, not actually “budgeting” for the next years anticipated needs.
But then again, the Feds haven't produced a budget in several years, have they?
So entirely gutting current budget offices would make perfect sense!
Any actual essential worker anywhere could be given the two hour additional duty once a year of adding 2-10% to next years budget based on the previous year, right? I give it two hours, in case they are not expert in Excell spreadsheets.
I think you better check your facts again. EVERYONE is effected. The union has no power to stop what is going to happen.
Some of you I can commend, some of you I can relate to, and you to me, but many of you, well, words cannot describe the horror of your comments. They are downright shameful, and hateful, and you deserve nothing but contempt and condemnation for them.
The many of you who are making comments like those following this paragraph have no concept of what someone like me will experience when this thing occurs. I survive, right now, on a take home income of less than $22,000, and when the sequester hits it'll be less than $18,000. I worked hard for the measly income I now make and now because politicians are more interested in gutting the military and defense instead of the massive social programs which spend much more money than the defense department does, I will lose the possibility of ever having a steady, stable, income.
These kind of comments are disgusting and the ones responsible for them should be ashamed of themselves. And yes, you are named ..
"Frankly, I cant drum up any sympathy for government employees at this point (sarasmom),"
"look federal workers....you get paid too much...you have too many benefits and God knows way too big a pension (cherry)",
"have to laugh at the people squealing like stuck piglets.
Those workers are dealing with the same apprehension and fear that the rest of us have dealt with over the past five years or so.
Welcome to our world. Sucks, doesnt it? (Vermont LT)
It would be great if it was going to be 10 times as many and not furlowed but FIRED PERMINANTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (dalereed) (ever hear of a spellchecker?)
Like Im gonna cry for some under-worked over-paid Govt Slackers! Try being a small business man with this Regimes daily harassment. The best damned thing that can happen for this country is to have all Fed so-called workers go home for permanently. (JohnKinAK)
Oh, those evil contractors who the government depends on but loves to hate.
No sympathy here. (Timber Rattler)
These kinds of comments are uncalled for and shows your ignorance and stupidity.
Now dont get me wrong, I have sympathy for those who are already out of work, whether it is because of a corrupt government or other reasons, and yes, those being harassed (yes, that means you JohnKinAK). Before I got my current job I was out of full-time work for 7 years, and survived on part-time or no work for 22 years from 1992 to 2013. I know the pain of not having a job or benefits. It eventually cost me my marriage.
To you cherry, I dont have many benefits and I have absolutely no pension fund or savings account. Theres no way I can do either on $22,000, now soon to be $18,000 (or less) take home pay a year. When I turn 62 in ten years, Ill probably be living in a one room cubicle in a nursing facility because thats all Ill be able to afford! You dont know of what youre talking about.
To you JohnKinAK, to a man struggling to make ends meet you want me permanently fired and sent packing because politicians want to squabble instead of making decent common sense decisions? Words escape me.
To you Timber Rattler, how little you know of those evil contractors. If you knew what I knew youd realize just how deceptive many (not all, but many) of them are.
Lastly, many of you who made posts showed genuine concern and sympathy, and I thank you. Honestly, though, I wasnt even posting to raise a complaint or whine about my situation. I was just sharing new details that emerged earlier in the day and I wanted you all to know about them.
Its amazing what people come out of hiding, and what kind of terrible comments come out of them. I guess I shouldnt be too surprised though huh? The Bible says in Matthew 15:19-20, For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: These are the things which defile a man.
I leave all spelling and grammer errors just to piss off people like you!!!
“You are an $$$.”
Spoken like a typical government employee: Overpaid by never by nearly enough.
See us in 3 months when congress returns your pay after using this opportunity to scare everybody.
“survived on part-time or no work for 22 years from 1992 to 2013. I know the pain of not having a job or benefits. It eventually cost me my marriage. “
That’s because you are a dipsh*t. I mean, it takes a real low information voter type to go that long without making the changes necessary to get a good job. Hell in the mid to late 1990’s you could get a job if you could just spell j*o*b. For 22 years during that period tens of millions of people went to school, joined the military, started companies and obtain good incomes. You, not so much, and you still merely landed something that brings home only $22k.
You want to throw stones? Look at your own broken glass house.

You are very entertaining, esp that response.
I think part of the reaction you cite is because liberals, Obama, MSMBS, Dems, are endlessly putting up human ‘victim’ individuals to sell their public policy.
So you post a vanity that appears to complain about how it will hurt you personally so now they can call you the names they really want to call those Obama tools they see Dems put on TV. (like Sandra Fluke, and Gabby). You helped them vent HA-HA.
I live in Maryland a huge beneficiary of Fed jobs and contracts and I know people who had/have those jobs here who are just wasting the taxpayers money, and they admit it.
They know they wouldnt survive in the real world employment,
