Autocracy: Still pulsing with the power from outlawing big servings of sweet drinks, Michael Bloomberg now wants to run Styrofoam out of his city. Clearly, he believes that everyone has to live exactly as he wants them to live.
During Thursday's State of the City address, New York Mayor Bloomberg called for a ban on Styrofoam food packaging.
It's all a part of his crusade to eliminate smoking, sugary drinks, salt and other items he doesn't like and, hence, thinks no one else should have.
So what comes next, Mr. Mayor? What's the target after Styrofoam? Beef? Eggs? Cheese? Or maybe a limit on toilet paper purchases? Or an outright ban on paper towels? Because paper products do have an environmental impact, don't they? Paper is the most common product found in landfills, making up 28.5% of volume.
Bloomberg is going after polystyrene because, he said, it "is virtually impossible to recycle and never bio-degrades." It is "something that we know is environmentally destructive," he said, and "is something we can do without."
"We will work," he promised, " to adopt a law banning Styrofoam food packaging from our stores and restaurants."

Why doesn’t he clean out the homeless shelter formerly known as Penn Station. It’s disgraceful that commuters and tourists have to walk past able bodied homeless men and smelly, dirty bag ladies shuffling around. As soon as you walk through the main area you smell bum.
LOL
I like that song, but I try not to listen to the words.
It was even worse in the seventies. Pimpmobiles and peep shows. Yeeeech. It puts "Taxi Driver" in perspective.
This is the natural chain of events in any major city. As time goes on, a city like New York becomes a place where more and more people live, and yet less and less really productive work ever gets done. At the end of the day, everything is a burden of some sort because youve got 8 millionFixed.peoplesoy latte-drinking hipsters in skinny jeans and Ugg boots living in a confined geographic area who are absolutely incapable of fending for themselves and end up living like domesticated animals.
Make that 3. He changed the “rules” so he could run again.....and did so.
Doesn’t look like it. But the damage has been done to the democratic process - which, I suppose, was what he and the City Council really wanted, anyway.
Polystyrene burns. Oh, I forgot, there is a burning ban.
[Polystyrene is a strong plastic created from erethylene and benzine that can be injected, extruded, or blow molded; making it a very useful and versatile manufacturing material. However, do not forget to recycle polystyrene products.
Most of us recognize polystyrene in the form of styrofoam used for beverage cups and packaging peanuts. However, polystyrene is also used as a building material, with electrical appliances (light switches and plates), and in other household items]
Just how far will the little dictator go? Will he set an example by going through all his houses and have everything that has this material stripped out? Will he have all insulation panels that keeps his houses warm taken out? How about the State Capitol, will he do the same there?
Well, that's what reelected twice means. Elected, reelected, and reelected again. Makes a total of three terms.
Reelected twice is actually more to the point - the first time can be put down to electing the unknown. But then reelecting the now known twice...that's just stupid.
“3 times. They voted for him 3 times...”
And quite possibly a fourth time, as well.
This is New York City — things are different here than they are in “America”.
Closing thought: if Bloomberg doesn’t run, look for his replacement to be even loonier!
I was listening to some story on NPR yesterday (I know, I know, once the story got my attention I had to hear it through) about how NYC is taking down the “no honking” signs because they haven’t made any difference. One New Yorker whom they interviewed was going on about what renegades New Yorkers are and how just seeing such a sign made them more likely to honk their horns. I rolled my eyes thinking, yeah, right, you guys are such renegades, that’s why you’ve repeatedly elected a nanny who lays down the law regarding what size soft drinks you can have, your salt intake, laws in opposition to your 2A rights, etc, and you’re all out marching in the streets in protest to this nanny statism. What rugged individualists!
Keep in mind that people driving and presumably honking in NYC are not New Yorkers. No one who lives there drives there.
Thanks for the reminder.
