Reid To Hold Cloture Vote On Hagel At 4:15 EST

IGOR BOBIC 3:16 PM EST, THURSDAY FEBRUARY 14, 2013

The Senate will hold a cloture vote on the nomination of Chuck Hagel as secretary of defense at 4:15pm ET on Thursday, Majority Leader Harry Reid announced. The move would end debate and move to a final vote on confirmation.

Several Republican senators, including Sens. John McCain (R-AZ) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC), said they plan to vote against cloture this week in order to allow more time to review Hagel's record. They indicated that they would move to end debate, even if ultimately opposed to Hagel, after the Senate returns from the 10-day Presidents' Day recess.

“They indicated that they would move to end debate, even if ultimately opposed to Hagel, after the Senate returns from the 10-day Presidents’ Day recess.”

This means they want Hagel nominated but that they will register a meaningless “no” vote. They just want to string it out a bit.

McCain & Graham lookin' for more face time on the Sunday talk shows.

They're almost as bad as John "Live Shot" Kerry.

Could be, but it also gives them 10 days to dig up more dirt on Hagel. Who’s to say they’ll still want to end debate when they get back. Could be a whole different ball game by then.

I really don’t understand the point in doing this. If we know he is going to be confirmed why wait a week? What do they hope to gain? Especially if they are announcing the fact before hand.

It would be great if they had some damaging info that they knew was going to be dropped between now and then that would change the outcome, but that is only the stuff dreams are made of.

LOL, neither does Dick Durbin. He was just on the floor of the Senate whining about how unfair it all is. Now it's Barbara Boxer babbling about how sad it all is. Poor Chuck Hagel, poor Barack Obama. Oh the humanity.

We don't know he'll be confirmed.

The news of what Hagel said about the State Dept. hasn't had a chance to bleed through to the talking head shows. I think the GOP wants this to be aired on Sunday talk shows to erode Hagel's support further to give them a chance to have better reasons to vote against cloture next week.

well, If all the libs are upset about it that is a good justification and provides for a modicum of amusement. I am however, convinced that our national security is about to get gutted putting millions of Americans at risk for acts of war that will dwarf 9/11. I am not referring to sequestration. I believe that nuclear disarmament and moth balling our weapon systems is the goal of Mr. Obama and playing political tidily winks one week at a time is both meaningless and insulting.

thanks for this reply. It is certainly a plausible explanation. I hope things work out this way. I am just tired of always hoping for the best (from a conservative perspective) and ending up with the worst. Also I hold out no hope for the next potential nominee in line to be any better than Hagel.

...and now Carl Levin just finished ranting about how dangerous the world is and how we can’t survive without Hagel at Defense right now!

If nothing else it’s nice to know that he woke up today and realized the world is a dangerous place. What a drama queen.

He’s always reminded me of the Penquin character from the Batman movie. The disgusting sewer dweller played brilliantly by Danny Devito.

I have yet to see consequences for his unconstitutional appointments.

I think the intent is to force each Democratic Jewish Senator to stand up and be counted as a friend of Israel, or an adversary.

yeah, I heard last night that those NLRB appointees declared unconstitutional are still working because.....their successors have not been appointed yet.

He got slammed by the courts which struck down his NLRB appointments.

That was the consequence. I don't think he's going to go for that failure twice.

So, the courts struck down his appointments, but they’re still working there and enforcing regulations with the force of law.

No consequences.

Obama won’t risk having the court strike down the Sec. of Defense. Too high profile.

I have given up trying to make a silk purse out of republicans' ridiculous sow's ears. But this much seems likely, the more this nomination hangs fire the worse it will stink. Time is on our side.
