Dem Congressman: ‘It’s Clear That We [Also] Need to Look at Handguns’

On Friday night’s Rachel Maddow Show, Illinois representative Luis Gutiérrez told guest host Melissa Harris-Perry that the violence in his Chicago district could be cause for lawmakers to take action not only on semi-automatic weapons, but on handguns. Noting (correctly) that nearly 97 percent of Chicago gun murders in 2011, the most recent year for which statistic are available, were carried out with handguns, Gutiérrez said,”It’s clear that we need to look at handguns also.”

The recent debate on gun control has centered around reimplementing a strengthened version of the 1994 assault-weapons ban and on limiting magazine sizes. It would leave handguns largely untouched.

Babies are murdered legally in all states.

I'm anti-abortion. The USSC has decided that a fetus and a baby are not one and the same. So according to law, babies are not being murdered.

We have abortion and Obama and the US is paying the price.

“The end-game is indisputable -— confiscation of ALL arms.”

No, it’s civil war.

Then end game is not confiscation of all arms. The end game is re-education camps.

Easy way to get rid of the thugs. Open season on gang banggers. Sell hunting permits for $500ea with a bag limit of 5. Turn the 5 in and get a bounty of $1000ea, then turn around and buy another permit.

Politicians are the dumbest a-holes on earth. This jerk needs to review the US SC Case D.C. v. Heller

The opinion of the US SC in the 2008 Heller case is that the 2nd Amendment is an individual right and that the banning of an entire class of firearms (specifically handguns) is prohibited. Further, in 2010 McDonald v. Chicago incorporated the 2nd under the 14th Amendmnet's Due Process Clause, thus applying the 2nd to the states. The stupid politician is not even aware that Chicago has been slapped down by the US SC just two years ago.

It has always been about handguns.

Assault rifles are just a decoy to try and get their anti-gun foot in the door.

Once they get a ban on AWs then they will use the same reasons to go after handguns.

John Kennedy killed with a 5 shot bolt action rifle.

Charles Whitman, killed 14, wounded 32 others mostly with a bolt action 6mm hunting rifle. Also used a shotgun and an m1 carbine.
Medgar Evers, shot with a 5 shot 1917 bolt action Enfield rifle.

Martin Luther King, shot with a 4 shot Remington 760 pump action Gamemaster rifle.

Bobby Kennedy with a .22 Iver Johnson Cadet revolver.

George Wallace wounded with a 5 shot Charter Arms .38spl revolver.

Howard Johnsons shooter killed nine, wounded thirteen with a 4 shot RUGER .44 mag Deerslayer rifle.

Gerald Ford attacked with a 7 shot 1911 semi auto.

Edmond OK post office with two National Guard 7 shot 1911 pistols.

Ronald Reagan and Jim Brady with an RG-14 .22 revolver.

What do they all have in common? NONE over 7 rounds, yet after each one came a cry of panic to ban all of them.

And here is what Nelson Pete Shields, founder of Handgun Control Inc had to say.

Nelson T. ‘Pete’ Shields
Founder of Handgun Control, Inc.

“I’m convinced that we have to have federal legislation to build on. We’re going to have to take one step at a time, and the first step is necessarily — given the political realities — going to be very modest.

Of course, it’s true that politicians will then go home and say, ‘This is a great law. The problem is solved.’ And it’s also true that such statements will tend to defuse the gun-control issue for a time.

So then we’ll have to strengthen that law, and then again to strengthen that law, and maybe again and again. Right now, though, we’d be satisfied not with half a loaf but with a slice. Our ultimate goal — total control of handguns in the United States — is going to take time.

My estimate is from seven to ten years. The problem is to slow down the increasing number of handguns sold in this country. The second problem is to get them all registered.

And the final problem is to make the possession of all handguns and all handgun ammunition — except for the military, policemen, licensed security guards, licensed sporting clubs, and licensed gun collectors — totally illegal.”

-Pete Shields, Chairman and founder, Handgun Control Inc., “A Reporter At Large: Handguns,” The New Yorker, July 26, 1976, 57-58

What is clear to the people, is we need to take a look at nutjob politicians who have armed guards trained to kill at the drop of a hat. If anyone should be questioned about the right to have arms, it is the DC corrupt nutbags, their lawyers, and various faceless bureaucrats that are jacking our rights, our property, our privacy, and our healthcare information.
