Egypt Court Suspends YouTube Over Anti-Islam Film

An Egyptian court ordered the suspension of online video service YouTube for a month on Saturday for broadcasting a film insulting the Prophet Mohammad, state media reported.

The country's administrative court ordered the ministries of communication and investment to block YouTube, owned by Google, inside Egypt because it had carried the film "Innocence of Muslims," said state news agency MENA.

The 13-minute video, billed as a film trailer and made in the United States, provoked a torrent of anti-American unrest in Egypt, Libya and dozens of other Muslim countries in September.

The video depicts the Prophet as a fool and a sexual deviant. For most Muslims, any portrayal of the Prophet is considered blasphemous.

The court said it was ruling on a case brought about the film several months ago, without going into further detail.

YouTube had "insisted on broadcasting the film insulting Islam and the Prophet, disrespecting the beliefs of millions of Egyptians and disregarding the anger of all Muslims" the court said, according to MENA.

What's with this "one" month business? Would Muhammad be satisfied with such a lenient sentence? Depicting Muhammad as a fool and sexual deviant is quite an insult, yet the Egyptian court suspends YouTube for merely only a month. Unless it's a copyright infringement YouTube will not censor videos as being part of free speech. For example, YouTube has resisted all attempts by Jewish groups to remove Nazi videos, some of them quite vile, on the basis of free speech. I find a mere one month suspension quite hypocritical. Perhaps, they don't want to miss the new YouTube series coming soon, "To Catch A Predator:Muhammad and His 9 Year Old Bride"

Egyptians will just become more familiar with ways to use proxy servers to get around restrictions and view what they want.

Yes, that’s an excellent point. But that’s what I find puzzling. The Muslim Brotherhood are fundamentalists who run the country and seek to enforce a more stricter interpretation of Islam.

Control freaks in our country force kids to eat stuff they don’t want at school - insist we use certain light bulbs, detergents, sugar drinks etc. Horrible liberal control freaks and horrible Muslim control freaks are brothers under the skin... Homeland Security would love to have the power to control what we see... and read ... and think...

Ummmm that never happened at all, period. Reuters is total garbage. Liberal/communist crap. Every article written by AP/Reuters/NYTIMES sounds like it is being spoken/written by a 18 year old freshman feminist political science major who is literally, ignorant but just making stuff up that fits what they wish was the case, supporting their self-loathing narrative. Pathetic.

You know most Egyptians aren't the urban college kids the media portrayed during the "arab spring", right?

Most Egyptians are poor, ignorant, and support Sharia. It is not an accident the most popular party's are Islamists. The Muslims Brotherhood is defending it's flank from an even more radical Islamist party, not from freedom minded secular parties.

My guess is that most Egyptians, the vast majority of whom do not use YouTube, will likely support these kinds of court rulings.

Aw, nuts.

Now Egyptians won't be able to watch women stoned to death, or daughters honor killed, unless they do it themselves, and it's hard to dig them holes in that hard dry ground.

Plenty of rich Egyptians who support sharia and the imposition of Islamic peace upon the world. Wouldn't surprise me if it were a majority. Man does not live by bread alone.
