C. Reports and Metrics The solution must provide real-time monitoring of relevant conversations. It should provide sentiment analysis (positive, negative or neutral) around key conversational topics. It must be able to provide summaries or high level overviews of a specific set of topics. It should have a configurable dashboard that can easily be accessed by internal analysts or management. The dashboard must support customization by user or group access. The solution should provide an alerting mechanism that automatically sends out reports or notifications based a predefined trigger.
D. FRBNY Technology Integration The solution must be able to integrate with existing FRBNY technologies such as: Google Search appliance, Lotus notes suite and web trends.It must have support for single sign on or windows integrated authentication.
E. Cost Structure The solution should offer a flexible pricing structure that can support multiple user licensing. It should also have the option to base pricing on content volume and usage. Supplier acknowledges an understanding of and agrees to comply with the above minimum solutions requirements.

Had a very strong feeling about this. I have a FB account which I use for work related purposes. There’s nothing on there other than a few friends sending me job leads and LOL Cheezeburgers to cheer me. (Unemployed).
About 4 years ago my father was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery, he was in for 5 hours. We almost lost him. Spent the whole day with my mother and sister who were freaking out he would die, so when we left the hospital he was resting, crisis averted and I was exhausted. Posted a video on FB of Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb” when I got home, took a long bath and fell asleep on the couch.
An hour or so from posting I had a knock on my doorfrom two of my states finest. To this day I don’t know why they came to my door, none of my friends called on me. They said they were there because of my video. From that day on, I never post anything other than “Happy Birthday/Anniversary” on FB or Cheezeburgers.
I finally got off of it last year.
I run a computer security company now. I used to work crypto for the military. I’ve done computer security for numerous federal govt agencies over the last decade.
Its my belief that most of the govt is too disorganized and incompetent to do any effective monitoring. The groups which do this kind of stuff are the exception.
IMHO they can (if they want) monitor every person they want 24 hours a day. They don’t for most people because its too expensive and most don’t represent a risk.
Having a computer connected to the internet makes it easy for them to monitor through automated tools. They can track your internet traffic or install software on your computer.
Again IMHO the only secure method of communicating does not include the use of a computer. Encryption of any type doesn’t help when they have the master key. Sounds paranoid but then I’ve been been around stuff you normally read about in a Tom Clancy novel.
After all, beer IS proof that God loves us, and wants us to be happy...

I could not agree more. That is why the Bosheviks and the Mensheviks are both whimpering in eagerness to control it. Porn, gambing, etc. etc. will flow unchecked - the new opiate of the masses has its uses. Political discourse, especially what will be defined as ‘extreme’ will be targeted.
The subjects of former Soviet Union were able to do a lot though, and with far fewer resources. SAMIZDAT hand written press, in a totalitarian state where sheets of paper were to be accounted for. The slow and almost imperceptible erosion of the CPUSSR’s policies and popularity by samizdat definitely played a role in the downfall of the Soviet Union. When the Day arrived, most Soviet subjects were apathetic or were enthused about the fall of the tyranny in their ‘Beltway’.
Our Statists are mentally stuck in a 1930s - 1970s loop. They are decades behind those they would like to control. Obama and his circle are a case in point. Not one original idea, even bad ones, have come from them. It is all the recycled plodding plottings of long dead Marxists.
Agree / Disagree. I also work directly with Feds, and have a strong level of involvement with website security (which is admittedly different than crypto). While I agree the gov't as a whole, if deciding to be all Stasi on us, would likely be stuttering fusterclucks of a miserable failures, like you said: a) there are groups that would not; b) automation tools would make the task manageable, and c) these tools can and probably are presently being used to give the Democrats a strong election advantage. Nothing else truly explains 2012 and the shock we all got (including the left, btw).

I think the connection you made is accurate. The one point i would add is that its probably not the govt directly providing this information for elections. The govt is probably paying for the people who are though. Its some kind of grant or contract.
There’s also the govt run media and complete failure of the GOP.
I think the most annoying part of government monitoring is that they can’t get it together enough so that just *one* agency does the monitoring, and shares with the others.
Instead, the NSA is monitoring everyone, and the CIA, and the FBI, and the who knows who else. But using an old land line telephone analogy, “There are so many spies listening to my phone, whoever I want to talk to and I have to shout at each other to be heard. And half the time, one of the spies tells us to talk softer, because he had his gain set too high.”
Defense contractors in the IT realm are bidding for software that allows one person to simultaneously manage 10 social networking profiles. The better to spy online with.
