The White House on Wednesday blamed the surprising contraction of the economy at the end of last year at least partly on Republican "political brinkmanship" for threatening to let defense cuts take effect.
White House spokesman Jay Carney said similar threats over a looming March 1 deadline when defense and other cuts take effect absent a broader budget deal could similarly hurt the U.S. economy and taxpayers.
"This is political brinkmanship with one primary victim, and that is American taxpayers and the American middle class," Carney said at a briefing.
"Our economy is facing a major headwind ... and that's Republicans in Congress."
Carney referred to comments by former vice presidential candidate and House of Representatives Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, who said Sunday he believes the automatic spending cuts will go into effect because Democrats have not offered alternatives, and remarks made by House Speaker John Boehner.
Boehner said in a January 6 interview that he had the spending cuts "in my back pocket" for use as a bargaining chip in budget talks with the White House.
"It's not a game. It's the American economy," Carney said. "The American people - those who pay attention to this issue in detail - are rightly appalled by those kind of tactics that, you know, do harm to their lives, do harm to the economy in the name of ... achieving some political objectives here in Washington."

I wonder how many times little Barry Soetoro used the old standby, “The dog ate my homework” excuse. Grow up Barry!!!
I wonder if he takes credit for Sasha and Malia.... and if it’s true.

If it isn’t a bogeyman, it’s a straw man. Anything but taking responsibility. Won’t work when they have to face their Maker.
What exactly do they think the alternative is?
The Sequester is LAW. They agreed to it. They signed it. It takes place. If you don’t want it to take place, then offer up some other $120 Billion in 2013 spending cuts.
What they don’t seem to get is that YOU HAVE TO CUT $120B. They already agreed to do that. If they want to cut from elsewhere, fine, but it MUST BE $120B in 2013. No stretching it out. No playing games. $120 Billion in 2013.
So, offer up somewhere else to cut. And heads up there, Rufus, the upcoming Continuing Resolution will require even more cuts, and some of it will be 2013. Every penny of it is GDP drag and that’s just the way it has to be.
The party is over. Oh, and btw, if you want some tax increases for “balance”, then go ahead and propose them, on the middle class, and recognize that tax increases are just as much a GDP drag as spending cuts.
THE PARTY IS OVER.
Weird. Didn’t these defense cuts come from Obama in the first place? It wasn’t a proposal from the GOP House.
When are the people going to recognize the massive power of the Republican Party. If everything is their fault maybe we should have them control Washington and reverse everything they have been doing since Obama took office.
Reuters’ writers do a bang-up job spinning on behalf of their party.
This report/column is particularly amusing.
Surely this little a-hole (Mr Carney) will be going to hell one day? He is a master at the art of deception...
Well, that’s a big surprise. Who could have seen it coming?
How long are we going to let Obama mess up the economy and then blame his for his ineptitude?
No surprise, even expected, the Real Problem is the Feckless Republicans who just sit there and continue to say nothing in return.
“No surprise, even expected, the Real Problem is the Feckless Republicans who just sit there and continue to say nothing in return.’
No doubt McConnell and Boehner will enjoy some great dinners out with their favorite lobbyists this week. Perhaps they’ll bring one or two of the GOP freshmen along to show them the way.
I guess I was Wrong, for whatever its worth,
