NRA ally Debbie Halvorson could win Jesse Jackson Jr.’s Chicago seat

A white ex-congresswoman with an “A” rating from the National Rifle Association is the front-runner to replace former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. in a majority-black Chicagoland district with inner-city neighborhoods wracked by gun violence.

At first glance, Debbie Halvorson should have no business winning the Feb. 26 special election. The former Democratic congresswoman was crushed by Jackson in a primary last year. She’s a white Democrat seeking to represent a district in which 54 percent of voters are African-American.

**SNIP**

Now, black leaders — concerned about Halvorson’s position atop polls — say they’re prepared to make gun control the central issue in the contest. The goal is to paint her as an NRA ally who’s too conservative for the seat and insensitive to Chicago’s rising tide of gun violence.

The filing deadline is quite passed, it was Jan 9th so there will be no new entries.

I support primary runoffs but I don’t think they’d ever push for that.

At least not unless Debbie was reelected a couple times cause they couldn’t get their stuff together and field 1 candidate against her. ;) That would have me in hysterics.

She is in for a LOT of hostility if she wins.

The White and Black breeds of Rattus Illini seem about twice as hostile to the idea of sharing a rat hole as the rats in Nashville.

I hope all politicians will decide that we should ignore each candidate’s skin color, but that probably won’t happen, in Illinois, for at least 10 more years.

So several days ago one of the more prominent Black candidates, State Sen Toi Hutchinson, dropped out and endorsed Robin Kelly, her name will remain on the ballot though. Hilariously, pro-Kelly ads blasting Hutchinson as an NRA supporter like Debbie H continued to air the next day.

I predict Kelly will win.

Whom do you hope will win the GOP primary? I hope that Eric Wallace will win.

Even with Toi and Napoleon dropping out and endorsing Kelly (but staying on the ballot), there are still three other prominent black candidates, so Halverson still might win.

I would go with Wallace also, he’s by far the most noteworthy candidate.

We will know in a few hours.

So I’m not really shocked at the size of Kelly’s win, the writing was on the on the wall, Napoleon and Toi were obviously forced out behind the scenes.

Apparent GOP winner Paul McKinley spent 20 years in prison for armed robbery amongst other things.

Just the guy to lead our charge against gun control!

But, but, McKinley is no GOP-E. The other candidates once shook hands with someone who was elected to office once, do they must be Combiners. Only a felon can be trusted to be true to conservstism.

Why did so many Republicans vote for a felon? Were they unaware of his crimes, or did they think that the crimes aren’t important?

No idea. But I’m not sure that the term “so many Republicans” is correct, as winner Paul McKinley received less than 1,000 votes (which is not shocking, being a low-turnout primary in an overwhelmingly Democrat CD).

For what it’s worth, Legal Insurrection has been touting Paul McKinley for months:

And sure, he’s a felon, but he’s probably not as bad of a Republican standardbearer as were deadbeats Christine O’Donnell or Joe Walsh.

Certainly they were unaware. This was a low turnout and low info primary, in these cases people just choose the name they like best.

He seems like a decent guy and genuinely reformed but still having a former armed robber go up against the new Queen of gun control, you could hardly draw it up worse.
