Why did so many Republicans vote for a felon? Were they unaware of his crimes, or did they think that the crimes aren’t important?

No idea. But I’m not sure that the term “so many Republicans” is correct, as winner Paul McKinley received less than 1,000 votes (which is not shocking, being a low-turnout primary in an overwhelmingly Democrat CD).

For what it’s worth, Legal Insurrection has been touting Paul McKinley for months:

And sure, he’s a felon, but he’s probably not as bad of a Republican standardbearer as were deadbeats Christine O’Donnell or Joe Walsh.

Certainly they were unaware. This was a low turnout and low info primary, in these cases people just choose the name they like best.

He seems like a decent guy and genuinely reformed but still having a former armed robber go up against the new Queen of gun control, you could hardly draw it up worse.
