CUMMING (AP) - Iowa Senator Tom Harkin said he will not seek re-election in 2014.

The 73-year-old told The Associated Press in an interview, "It's just time to step aside."

By the time Harkin would finish a sixth term, he would be 81 years old.

A great pick-up opportunity for us with the right candidate.

Yes!!! Since Missouri does not have a Senate race this time, my Tea Party group is eager to get involved in this race and help "the right candidate".

IF ANYONE HAS ANY IOWA TEA PARTY CONTACTS, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!

Why do I have the feeling that obama has hand picked the replacement during the past four years?

Now, the task for Iowa Republicans is to choose wisely who to run. This is no place for emotion. If I could appoint someone, I would appoint Steve King but I can't appoint someone and I fear SK may not be our strongest candidate as the eastern side of the state is more liberal than the western side.

We don't want to lose him in the House, although his seat should be a safe Republican seat.

I truly only care about which one of these would be our toughest candidate to defeat the Democrat. Latham might be that person. He's proven to be a consistent winner, even in a district that is not as conservative as SK's district.

Probably our strongest general-election candidate would be Congressman Tom Latham of IA-03. Latham got screwed over in redistricting in both 2000 and 2010, each forcing him to run in a district that was almost entirely new to him and less Republican than the previous one, yet was able to win rather comfortably each time. Over his 15 years or so in the House, he has represented nearly half the state, and his current district is based in Des Moines (the state’s largest city) and was carried by Obama 51.24%-46.97% last year, which was only 0.76% less Democrat than the state as a whole. Latham is an experienced campaigner, has a conservative voting record without being polarizing, and has a history of winning independent and Democrat votes. While I’m a big fan of Congressman Steve King, he has only won in comfortably Republican districts, and I don’t think he’d fare very well running statewide in a state where McCain and Romney only got 44% and 46%, respectively.

Just go for the one most likely to defeat the Democrat. Any of them would be far better than any Democrat.

I personally know everyone of these mentioned. They’re all fine people, now just to sort out who would be the strongest candidate.

There is about as much substance to Dungheap Harkin as there is to John F’ing Kerry.

Fund the Green Party candidate to siphon votes away from the Donkeys?
(Unrealistic, but the leftists use similar strategies all the time).

Truer words were never spoken. I think we lost more than
just two senate seats because of that word.

Harkin can safely retire knowing socialism is now in the driver’s seat and there is no longer that much need for his services. I would imagine he will anoint his own successor.

“Excellent news. One of the more obtuse and ignorant men ever to disgrace the Senate.”

Probably not good news. After he votes for gun control he feels he would loose. And it can’t be tied around the next dem’s neck.

“THAT is something we really must fix by returning “service” to public service and rotating these clowns every few years with TERM LIMITS and seiously reduced retirement benes.”

Agree, and never could understand the argument(s) against the simplicity of the premise. So many of these devious clowns are lifers simply due name recognition. Take away the ability to make a lifelong career out of serving oneself at the public trough, and people will have to actually think about who they are voting for.

since the Dems are gonna lose the senate in 2014,

Don't bet on it. The Reps thought they were going to take back the Senate in 2012 and wound up losing two seats. The Dems will retain control of the Senate in 2014 and the Reps will be hard pressed to retain control of the House. Obama's conversion of his Organizing for America campaign organization into a populist organization supporting the progressive agenda will have a major impact on the 2014 elections. It will have $1.6 billion to spend.

The Reps are divided and dispirited. Boehner's cave on the fiscal cliff and the support of the pork filled $61 billion Sandy bill have demonstrated that the Reps lack the will to fight Obama and curb spending.
