Department of Homeland Security: Sport rifle (AR-15) “suitable for personal defense”

Posted by Steve McGough on January 15, 2013 at 8:28 am

The United States Department of Homeland Security has stated a rifle chambered in 5.56 NATO (compatible with .223) with a magazine capacity of 30 rounds is “suitable for personal defense use in close quarters…”

Well smack me up-side the head. First, a hat tip to Breitbart’s Awr Hawkins who pointed us to a posted General Services Administration (GSA) business opportunity solicitation posted and updated last summer. Basically, the site posts a request for proposal (RFP) for personal defense weapons for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) division of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

This RFP is not for the traditional armed forces. This solicitation is specific to law enforcement who almost exclusively work within and along the borders of the United States. Certainly the threats ICE officers may be subject to are the same exact threats law-abiding residents could be subject to.

I would strongly suggest wearing hearing protection especially when firing indoors. Deafness and/or tinnitus are not your friends.

WHAT?????

My FFL had a PS-90 (semi-auto version) a few years back. It's an odd duck. Ammo was hard to find at the time and prospects for a good supply didn't look good. As such, I passed on the opportunity. Topped with a Trijicon sight for low light use, it is pretty capable. The brass drops straight down and it is ambidextrous (fired equally well by a left handed or right handed shooter).

I assume by “sportsman” they mean “hunting & fishing”, I do both. The term “sportsman has also been used to describe some who engage in other activities that don’t include me. I don’t consider myself a “sportsman” either and I don’t consider my right to own firearms has anything to do with hunting or any other “sporting” purposes. Any other uses besides protection which includes personsl, family, community and country are a fringe benefit which also helps keep my proficient in their use.

The cops will ignore the mag limit, too. Who is going to enforce it against them?

mi casa es su casa.

Now that you put it that way, I'll just politely borrow the pic and return it when everyone I know has seen it. Will try not to get thumbprints all over it.

From "The Missouri Breaks" Kathleen Lloyd and Jack Nicholson ......... Jane Braxton: Are you an outlaw?

Tom Logan: I'm a jackpot farmer with one milk cow and a hundred-square-foot patch of vegetables.

Jane: Then how come you have so many guns?

Tom: Because I'm a sportsman.

Jane: Why do you have a sawed-off shotgun?

Tom: Because I'm a sawed-off sportsman.

That's assuming they aren't exempt to begin with.

Reports say that the law as passed did not have an exception for police.
