It's been a rough morning for many parents and their children in New York City, where about 8,000 school bus drivers and monitors have gone on strike meaning about 152,000 students had to get to school some other way...
It's going to be chaotic," New York City school's Chancellor Dennis Walcott tells NY1 as his system and the city head into Day 1 of a strike by school bus drivers.
About 152,000 students, one third of them with special needs, rely on the yellow buses to get back and forth to school each day.
According to our colleagues at WNYC,the key issue in dispute is "the union's demand to include an employee protection provision in any new contracts the city signs with bus companies."

Those parents are just greedy and selfish for not wanting to pay the union workers a fair, living wage so that they can buy bread and milk for their kids . . . . .
The parents of the special needs kids should sue the union for violating the ADA.
The yellow buses are on strike? LOL
There are >grasp!< public transportation buses available, as well as the subway and taxis.
Geesh! when the public buses went on strike back in the 80’s we had to walk. People walked to work, students walked to school, yes we had to get up one hour earlier. I think that’s when the trend to wear sneakers to work and change shoes at the office became the norm.
“Any suffering or discomfort the residents endure is deserved. “
Ditto that. Elections have consequences.
Do the people in New York ever have any peace from their fellow citizens?
Grew up in The Bronx and still live here. NEVER saw a school bus unless we went on a trip. Some of us went to Catholic School, some of us went to Public School. EVERYONE WALKED! Bussing created traffic issues, safety issues, unnecessary jobs, pollution, and has contributed greatly to a completely disfunctional school system. In the 60’s, neighborhood schools WORKED! We all got good educations, regardless of color, race or ethnicity. Special needs children need transportation. Everyone else is within walking distance of a school. Maybe everyone should go to THAT school.
When did NYC get yellow buses? I do not recall seeing them. I was so jealous of my “upstate” friends who had this pick up service.
I lived on 139 St Riverside Drive and went to school on 79th street, east side. That’s two bus transfers or two subways depending on the weather. We had bus passes back then.
F Train for me to Kings Highway.
Good. I feel no pity for those parents.

(Mostly) went to Catholic School in Goshen NY, lived about 8 miles away in New Hampton and rode the County School Bus.
Seems like someone complained about the Catholics riding the bus and they were going to cut off the ‘privilege’.
The County HS was on top of hill, the Catholic grade/high school in middle of hill, elementary school at the bottom, all on same street and ‘we’ met at the nearest bus stop so only thing ‘out of ordinary’ was the stop in the middle of the hill.
The Priests mentioned it at Mass one Sunday and said maybe ‘we should let ‘them’ know if the outlying students can’t use the bus they will have to transfer to the Public School etc.
Bus service never did stop? hmmm wonder why?....Maybe the County ‘enjoyed’ collecting the fees for us and didn’t want to start having to spend them on us???
Some perspective: the 152,000 constitutes only 11% of total students. Attendance (88.5%) was only 1 percentage point less than a normal January day. 40% of bus routed are still operating as normal.
No school buses causes turmoil? A cancer diagnosis, traumatic car accident or drug addiction causes turmoil. Wussies.
1/3 of the students are ‘special needs’?!? REALLY? Just damn!
“1/3 of the students are special needs “
A growing scam; parents get supplemental SSI, the schools rake in more aid, and it’s “free”. I think I’m going to tell people I’m “on the autism spectrum”; I want the close parking spaces as the store, and could use the extra dough. Maybe my kids can do the same...
