Concern is heightening over the possible existence of up to 50 tons of enriched uranium in Syria, the Financial Times reported Tuesday, a stockpile large enough for the production of five atomic bombs.
To date, governments have largely focused on the fate of Syrias chemical weapons, and preventing their seizure by Islamic militants spearheading the ongoing uprising against President Bashar Assads rule.
As the country descends deeper into a sectarian civil war, however, fears have grown over the possible existence, and security, of a stockpile of processed uranium inside Syria.
An IAEA inspection team that visited the Al-Kibar site in May 2008 found only traces of uranium, fueling speculation that a large stockpile of uranium had been moved.

Either Syria had uranium-enrichment capabilities nobody knew about, or somebody accidently misplaced 50 tons of enriched uranium, or some other entity pursuing weapons of mass destruction found it expedient to hide evidence across a border.
I’m sure our mass media will put a major effort into finding out which it is. Unless of course there’s breaking Kardashian news that they have to focus on.
By Jose, you must mean Joe...as in Wilson.
Isn't that the assumption? AFIK, Syria has no uranium enrichment program and did not have one in the past. I remember there were some non-MSM stories about Hussein moving WMD out of Iraq into Syria and Lebanon.
Aw hell no - remember - Bush “lied” about that (although somehow we never hear about how Colin Powell “lied” too...).
I’m sure this is just “volunteer uranium” that sprung up out of the ground on it’s own, just a natural thing...after all Saddam didn’t have any WMD so how could he have any uranium over in Syria?
Oh yeah. /sarc
Sounds like Obama is looking for another excuse to invade Syria, while he ignores the growing threat in Iran.
Ping.
The Khan Network was a world wide consortium of Islamic countries and North Korea headed by Pakistan and It's father of their bomb, AQ Khan .
Basically a Islamic Manhattan Project to build an “Islamic Bomb” that would be shared by the Muslim world.
Iraq,Iran, Syria, Egypt, Pakistan, Turkey, North Korea, Libya, Indonesia, and a bunch of other countries were members.
There was a huge facility in Libya being built that Quaddafi surrendered and we shut down the day after Saddam was captured.
Saddam had outsourced his nuclear bomb projects to other countries, particularly Libya and Syria and set up facilities in those countries run by many expat Iraqi and Pakistani scientists.
.
This material probably came from Iraq or Russia (or from Russian supplied materials to Iraq) and is one of the reasons Russia is so interested in the civil war in Syria
My reply catch phrase to the morons spouting the whole "Bush Lied, People Died " mantra e has been - "Don't worry about finding Saddam's WMDs, eventually they will find us" .
Anyone who believes the "No WMDs in Iraq" mantra is too stupid to breathe. Unfortunately, there so many of these morons out there that their collective lack breath and exhaling of CO2 is singularly forestalling the onset of global warming./s
Saddams “gift” that took so long to ship that we had to pause the war to enable them...
I suspect it is now in Damascus, and that would explain why in Isaiah 17 the destruction of Damascus is forever and “no man will live there again”.
When Damascus gets nuked in the near future, that 50 tons will be scattered like the worlds biggest dirty bomb.
Thanks Olog-hai. Iraq’s stockpile? Or was this Debka? :’)
“According to one anonymous official quoted by the Financial Times, ‘Syria is almost certainly in possession of good quality uranium of the type that Iran has been trying to acquire on the international market for years. It would certainly be possible to transfer this from Syria to Iran by air.’
Soooo...it could, of course, have first been transferred by air from Iraq into Syria! Nice of them to point out how “certainly possible” it is for this uranium to have been Saddam’s.

It was driven in a convoy of trucks to the Bekkah Valley.
You can find pictures and eyewitness accounts of the transfer on-line, if inclined to look.
You can also find a smoking crater where my country bombed the shit out of the reactor a lot of it went to.

No worries. The US is backing the rebels who will probably get their hands on it.
“There was a huge facility in Libya being built that Quaddafi surrendered and we shut down the day after Saddam was captured.”
And we repaid Qaddafi by helping the beasts tear him to shreds. Lesson: never give up your nukes because a nuclear country does not have the US giving air support to its rebels.
It’s still right there.
