Several religious leaders joined Baltimore's mayor and state lawmakers Wednesday in urging new state gun control laws, calling for a wide-ranging package of bills designed to prevent tragedies like the shooting in Connecticut.
"The violence is simply too much, the grief is simply too profound," said Rabbi Ron Shulman of Chizuk Amuno Congregation, president of the Baltimore Jewish Council.
State Sen. Brian Frosh, a Montgomery County Democrat who chairs the Judicial Proceedings Committee, said that in the coming General Assembly session, he will push for a ban on assault weapons like the Bushmaster semiautomatic rifle used in last week's massacre.
Other proposed measures would limit magazine rounds to 10 bullets, empower the Maryland State Police to regulate gun stores and prohibit people who spent time in a mental hospital from owning guns for five years. Gun owners would also be barred from taking concealed weapons to places children congregate, such as libraries and day care centers.
The group that gathered to support the proposals included the Rev. Hal T. Ley Hayek, dean of the Episcopal Cathedral of the Incarnation; Imam Earl El-Amin of the Muslim Community Cultural Center of Baltimore; and state Del. Samuel I. "Sandy" Rosenberg, a Baltimore Democrat.
The leaders gathered at the Episcopal Diocesan Center next to the cathedral in North Baltimore, a site of gun control events in the mid-1990s, when Maryland outlawed assault pistols and set a one-gun-a-month limit on firearms purchases.
President Barack Obama said Wednesday that gun control will be a "central issue" as he begins his next term and that he will submit legislation in January.
Maryland lawmakers said they will proceed with their plans regardless of what happens in Washington.

It looks like these clowns have joined with the Iranian Islamoterrorists and the Red Chinese in their demand that the government disarm the American people.
Thats a “Conservative” synagogue, which means LEFT WING.
More unenforced gun laws aren't going to help.
These so-caled religious leaders are little more than useful idiots for the left. Guns, illegal immigration, social justice nonsense.
And for the record, Jesus Christ is not a religion. He's the Truth.
Soooo, a Rabbi, a priest, and a Imam go into a
because they can.
Although I’m not sure it’s a good idea for the Imam.
No killer cares about laws except they know they can kill many since no one will stop them as no one will have a gun.
These liberals are setting up victims to be killed.
I seem to recall something about liberals disliking churches getting involved in politics
” “The violence is simply too much, the grief is simply too profound,” said Rabbi Ron Shulman of Chizuk Amuno Congregation, president of the Baltimore Jewish Council.”
Sounds like more whining by a Deformed Jew.
Man Up, Rabbi. Get a gun and you won’t have to either repeat the Jewish experience in the Third Reich or have to cravenly depend on better men than you to defend you and yours.
Want to bet that Rabbi hyperventilates if anyone at the Seder pointed out that they were celebrating a very special event with major nationalism and military components?
How inspiring that the religious people want the constitution removed by decree.
Thankfully I never see an IFB preacher getting involved in this garbage. And how in Hell can a rabbi support gun control in any shape, matter or form?
I don’t believe you can infer such a thing.
calling for a wide-ranging package of bills designed to prevent tragedies like the shooting in Connecticut.
Life is tough. It is tougher when you are stupid.
No bills will, nor could they have, stopped the massacre that occurred in Newtown. We already have laws on the books against murder, assault, and Connecticut has some of the toughest gun laws in the country. Guess what. They did nothing to stop an evil person that wanted nothing more then to destroy lives. All laws serve only one purpose. That is to give a recourse to citzen AFTER a crime has occurred. We have laws against murder assault rape robbery burglary, drunk driving, illegal drugs and more weapons laws then you can shake a stick at. We still have murders assaults rapes robberies burglaries drunk drivers drug addicts and crimes committed with a weapon.
Hand-wringing *ssclowns haven’t yet quite managed to grasp the utterly obvious; i.e., that by their very definition, firearms laws are NOT observed by lawbreakers.
It is NOT the laws, but the disintegration of the moral fiber of a nation, that prevents this sort of disaster.
Fix the society, and stop worrying about violent crime.
Nah... too obvious for these circle-jerkers; they’d rather beat their p*ds raw than make sense.
Do not the Jewish people of Israel own guns for self-protection against crazy Islamists?
I am not “inferring” anything.
The so-called “Conservative” movement in Judaism is pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage, pro-tax increases, pro-welfare, pro Pali state, and pro-gun control.
There may be members who vote Republican, (and I know a Conservative Rabbi in in the South who is a fire-breather and might as well be a Freeper) but the overall stance of United Synagogue (which is the parent organization of the Conservative movement) is as I described.
(They were originally created to counter the Reform movement in the early 20th century, to “conserve” some of the tradition of the Orthodox movement but they have moved to the Left both religiously and politically).
This is so typically Maryland . . .
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
Anytime its something liberal...you can always count on the word “Episcopal” showing up.
A phony church for phony liberal lesbians to play dress up and pretend to be priests.
There. Fixed it.
