St. Louis County (Mo.) Top Cop Calls for Arming School Personnel
The Truth About Guns ^ | December 17, 2012 | Dan Zimmerman

Think of this as one of the first cracks in the dam. If you’ve been watching the constant drone of tragedy TV all weekend, pretty much all you’ve heard is the clamor throughout the land for more gun control. But Chief Tim Fitch who runs the St. Louis County PD sees the problem a little differently. As far as he’s concerned, more laws won’t save the life of a single student. Or mall walker. As he told stlouis.cbslocal.com, “If there’s somebody that’s really hellbent on doing something like this, they’re not going to care what the law is.” Fitch’s solution: end the policies that give whack-jobs like James Holmes and Adam Lanza the comfort of knowing they’re walking into gun-free, target-rich environments . . .

Chief Fitch wants to arm teachers and school administrative personnel. He likens it to arming pilots after 9/11.

“I see it no differently,” he said. “Pilots have been armed now for many many years, we’ve not had another hijacking and the issue is, for the bad guy, he doesn’t know which airplane he’s getting on, if the pilot is armed or not.”

Fitch knows he has a tough row to hoe in advocating putting guns in schools. The question is why that should be. How many more children have to die because people are squeamish about having armed, trained personnel on hand, in the schools who can react to an active shooter (or, God forbid, terrorist) situation faster than the police ever could.

Excellent reasoning. If the right people were armed at the school on Friday and/or if the school had security officers who could use a gun in the school they could have shot him before he killed a single person.

Another way of putting this:

If we cant trust school employees with a gun, why the hell are we trusting them with our children and grand children?

Seems like a no brainier to me...

It is a no brainier. You would think the school had tougher security and that someone should have shot the gunman. But it is in a loony leftist state where it is easier to commit mass shootings. Probably, and I do not know CT laws, the security officials could not carry guns inside the school. If they even had security.

Good idea. We will never in our lifetimes get rid of firearms - no matter what the gun-grabbing hand wringers may wish. Firearms in America are a fact of life, period. We cannot reasonable turn our schools into bunkers.

Given these two facts, the uncomfortable truth is that attacks by armed lunatics (insane and/or evil) are going to be a possibility. We must face this fact. The only way to reduce the risk and mitigate the danger is to have the means available to end such an attack as quickly as possible. That means armed and trained personnel on-hand at the schools. Maybe that means armed security guards. Maybe that means arming or allowing the staff to be armed. I would recommend some specific training and periodic qualification.
