Breaking: Nikki Haley to pick Tim Scott to replace DeMint in Senate

Welcome, my friends, to the least surprising political news of the week. Nikki Haley will appoint Rep. Tim Scott to replace Senator Jim DeMint in the US Senate, making Scott the upper chamber's only African-American member, and give him a boost in the 2014 special election for the rest of DeMint's term:

Multiple media sources are reporting that South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley will indeed name Rep. Tim Scott to be the next senator from South Carolina.

Scott will serve for two years, and then presumably run in a special election in 2014. If reelected, he would serve an additional two years (the remaining two years of the six-year term Jim DeMint was elected to in 2010) and then potentially run again for a full-six year term in 2016.

Also from Brother Jim at NRO comes this piece of ironic trivia:

Tim Scott beat Strom Thurmond’s son in the 2010 House primary. Now he will sit in the seat Thurmond once occupied. bit.ly/T2mv3t

— jimgeraghty (@jimgeraghty) December 17, 2012

The Charlotte Observer picked up the story a few minutes ago as well:

U.S. Rep. Tim Scott, who overcame poverty in North Charleston to build a successful business and political career, will be appointed today by Gov. Nikki Haley to the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Republican Jim DeMint, The New York Times and CNN reported this morning.

Haley has scheduled a noon news conference to announce her pick. DeMint and U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, a Republican from Seneca, are scheduled to attend.

That makes a lot of sense; DeMint reportedly went to bat for Scott as his replacement, and he’s likely to cheer the decision as the new head of the Heritage Foundation. His blessing will be seen as an important key for Haley.

That means that Haley will have to call a special election for Scott’s soon-to-be vacant seat. The election will have to be held in 18 weeks, with a primary in 11 weeks. Can SC-01 produce another clear conservative to replace Scott? We will soon find out. Regardless, this is a great choice for Haley, even if it was the only obvious choice.

Great test. My dot is exactly at the junction of Right/Conservative, Moderate and Libertarian.

The only thing I regret about the Tim Scott appointment is that he would have been the best person to primary out Lindsey Graham in two years hence. I'm hopeful that will still happen.

We have another great candidate for this -- MICK MULVANEY

A Mulvaney-Scott tandem for South Carolina? What's not to like?

Here he is on the issues

Tim Scott is brave. At least in the Old South when a slave escaped from the Plantation, the other slaves cheered him on and prayed he wouldn’t be eaten alive by bloodhounds.

Today, we can expect that at least some of the bloodhounds who will being going after Tim Scott will be his fellow African-Americans, like Jesse Jackson and the Reverend Al Sharpton.

Good choice Governor!

I seriously hope this guy joins forces with the likes of my Senator, Mike Lee. I equally hope that the GOPes like McConnell, Graham, Kyl, and other such spineless wussies stay away from him. We don't need this good man corrupted with the disease known as RINOitis!

Good news! :-)

What a REAL shame is that he isn't replacing the Kenyan.

Yeah, I’m just looking at it from the big picture/racial politics angle. Having lost most of the ideological battles over the years, there is in my opinion nothing more important for the left at this time than maintaining the narrative that the GOP is a bunch of “racist, sexist homophobes” with the Tea Party being practically indistinguishable from the KKK. The elections of Allen West and Tim Scott in 2010 destroyed that narrative at least as it relates to blacks, but they came after Allen West the hardest because of his higher profile. Tim Scott better get ready, because they’ll be coming at him now with everything they’ve got.

“As I said before. The color of the man’s skin is ( and should be ) irrelevant. It’s his RECORD that counts, and he HAS a track record for all to see.”

This is doubly true for the current occupant of the White House. So many voted on skin color, rather than character.
Just the drug use, admitted in his autobiography would have disqualified a conservative, let along the supposedly illegal use of a social security number, and his sealed records.

Your post makes NO sense at all. It is jibberish nonsense...I came on this thread to find out about Scott and I have never seen a group of adults who at least have typing skills who talk like that. !$#@%$....my freaking hair hurts...I will just call Scott’s office.

Well, here’s some good news, for a change.

I agree. This is the only good news our side has had in the past two months.

The night he was elected, he talked openly and proudly about how frequently his mother came barreling into him with *her* spikes vengefully high. He attributes his sense of discipline to having had those spikes embedded in his being. I think his principles have been adequately burnished.
