Obama's Big Michigan Right-To-Work Lie: Lower Wages
IBD EDITORIALS ^ | December 11, 2012

The president says right-to-work laws mean "the right to work for less money." So how does he explain the fact that incomes are up in RTW states while forced unionism is a proven job killer?

Campaigning Monday in Michigan as it stood poised to become the nation's 24th right-to-work state, President Obama spoke the exact opposite of the truth to union workers at a Daimler Detroit Diesel plant in the birthplace of organized labor.

"What we shouldn't be doing," he told the small crowd, "is trying to take away your rights to bargain for better wages. We don't want a race to the bottom. We want a race to the top."

Yet looking at the hard numbers, becoming a right-to-work state is a direct line to the top.

According to Michigan's Mackinac Center, using data taken from the Bureau of Economic Analysis and Bureau of Labor Statistics, private-sector, inflation-adjusted employee compensation in right-to-work states increased by 12% between 2001 and 2011 compared with just 3% over the same period in forced-unionization states.

These good wages came from good jobs. Employment in right-to-work states expanded 2.4% over the same stretch vs. a 3.4% decline in non-right-to-work states. Ironically, Obama is taking credit for jobs created in RTW states.

All Politics

According to the National Institute for Labor Relations Research, right-to-work states (excluding Indiana, which passed a RTW law in early 2012) "were responsible for 72% of all net household job growth across the U.S. from June 2009 through September 2012."

With all this “campaigning” and community organizing that BO has been doing nonstop since the election, I really would like to know the crowd sizes. It’s not ever talked about.

Some would prefer to have ZERO union jobs than to see ANY non-union jobs. This is all part of the “hate employers, love employees” crap.

I am shocked that this legislation prevents you from walking into your manager's office and asking for a raise. Shocked!

The freedom to associate with whom on wants is the real issue.

People should be allowed to associate or not associate as they choose. They shouldn’t be compelled by government to do one or the other.

I’m betting that union dues nationwide will have to go up considerably to make up for the losses in Michigan.

Its really very sad. (((snicker)))

The local news here from Jackson Michigan says there were approximately 3000 pro union protesters.

The dirty little secret is that there was considerable support for RTW from within the unions themselves. A polling firm in Lansing found it to be at about 40% in union households.

Exactly. And the irony here is the continuance of collective bargaining.

These agitators don’t give a damn about anyone but themselves.

Got Twinkies?

I am part of the 1% that does not have Twinkies. We need to have Barry collect all Twinkies and redistribute them.

And you might never have Twinkies again because the union voted Hostess out of business. Even obama can’t redistribute what ain’t there. You will have to settle for Oreos.

They will be back, there are companies, right now, bidding for the brand name and they will have exactly the same ingredients.

Michigan’s governor made another good point on OReilly last night. He said it was a matter of choice.

The real point, he said, is that if unions provide a value that Michiganders will choose to belong. If they don’t give the right bang for the buck that workers have to pay them, then they won’t choose the union.

That’s no different than anyone else I hire to do work for me. If I hire a painter and he does a crappy job, then I’ll not hire him again. If I choose to invest with ING and they lose money for me, then I’m firing them and hiring someone else.

But It’s My Choice!

If I go with the union and they do a crappy job like they did with Twinkies to where they are killing an entire company, then you bet I’m firing them long before it gets to that point.

And if I’m just coming to a new job, I look at the union and look at their track record for what they want me to pay.

If it’s lousy, I’m not hiring.
