Sick and tired of a burglar stealing packages from homes in her neighborhood, a San Francisco woman took matters into her own hands on Tuesday, according to the Daily Mail.
Luring the thief with a dummy package, Sonya Yu sprayed him with bear repellent and threatened him with a wooden sword, chasing him away. Minutes later, the alleged burglar, Andy Anduha, 51, was apprehended by law enforcement.

Yu, a photographer, recounted the entire incident on her Twitter account as events unfolded.
Yu informed her followers that several items had been stolen by Anduha. "He steals packages from door stoops - stole $1K+ worth from us earlier in the fall. He's been targeting our neighborhood."
"My bear spray, bokken, & I are still not intimidated,'" she tweeted Tuesday at 2:10 p.m. A bokken is a wooden sword used for samurai training.
Shortly after 4:45 p.m. the same day she tweeted, "I GOT HIM WITH THE BEAR SPRAY BUT HE ESCAPED." Then, less than 15 minutes later, "I AM PUTTING HIM UNDER CITIZENS ARREST RIGHT NOW WITH 4 COPS."

Bear spray is dangerous and harsh and can blind humans. Good for her.

Wasp and hornet spray is rumored to be a cheaper alternative to bear spray, and it doesn’t arouse suspicion like bear spray does.
Buckshot would have been more effective but would have gotten her arrested in San Francisco.

Wasp and hornet spray could very well do permanent damage.
I wouldn't recommend wasp or hornet spray except to save ones life.
What works better is wasp spray...nasty stuff and has better range than bear spray. People in the Yukon Territory often carry wasp spray instead of bear.
Since it’s CA and esp. SF., she’ll be charged with using a product for which it wasn’t intended. Now if she were protecting herself from a bear, well then ....

Using spray where one was justified in using deadly force could be acceptable but maybe not wise.
Using deadly force where one was only justified in use a lesser degree of force will land one in a lot of trouble.
Using force that causes some one permanent damage may or may not be justifiable.
Using pepper spray is not considered to be causing permanent damage. Where other sprays that have not been developed for use against humans or animals might be considered excessive.

In 1973, when I was an AF captain assigned to Hill AFB, UT, the Ogden Air Logistic Center Commander, my boss and I were given a guided tour of Tooele Army Depot. At that time Tooele held much of the US stockpile of nerve gas. The person giving us the tour told us that Black Flag insect spray had the same ingredients as nerve gas, only in a very greatly dilute form. So, if you spray enough of the Black Flag insect spray on the perp you may put out his lights permanently, not that I would feel too bad about that.
I was out hiking when I found myself between a grizzly sow and her cubs. She immediately charged me. I reached into my pack for my can of wasp spray when I remembered I had used it at home and forgot to put it back. I had one of those OFF mosquito fan things, so I turned it on and pointed it at her. She pulled up right in front of me and grabbed the machine.
“My, my,” she said. “What will they think of next?”
Then she ate me.
Bear spray is milder than the pepper spray made to defend against people.
