Authorities tied the teenage cousins killed by a homeowner after they broke into his Little Falls, Minn., house Thanksgiving Day to a similar break-in the night before.
Prescription drugs from the earlier burglary were found in the red Mitsubishi Eclipse that Nicholas Brady, 17, and Haile Kifer, 18, drove when they broke into Byron David Smith's home north of Little Falls, Morrison County Sheriff Michel Wetzel said Wednesday, Nov. 28.
Deputies are now reviewing police reports to see if other burglaries are connected to the teens.

But they were such nice kids
FReepers wanted that man dead yesterday but he probably saved the taxpayers a lot of money.
Plus he seems nuts and he’ll likely be locked away for life.
Oh I am sure a neighbor somewhere has already said that to a reporter somewhere...
“They seemed so normal...”
Smith is retired from the U.S. State Department where he worked as a security engineer, a position responsible for security of embassies and diplomats around the world.
He was responsible for the security of embassies around the world but couldn't secure his own home. How ironic.
Everyone seems normal in the beginning, then you get around to asking for a bit of history, and folks admit...well...Johnny did get suspended from school for two weeks, and Ervin was detained by the county deputy for assault. Then folks start to remember more details, and put one and one together.
No, he's going to cost the taxpayers a lot of money in a trial and many decades of housing at Club Fed.
When you say things like "If you're trying to shoot somebody and they laugh at you, you go again," admitting you fired "more shots than I needed to," and are proud of your "good clean finishing shot," you've crossed the line from self defense to murder.
maybe Marx Dayton can send out Rice to explain what happened was due to a youtube video.
The criminal complaint:

The shooter will go prison, but I know who got the longer sentence.
His federal State Department pension will pay for that.
“you’ve got to ask yourself one question: “Do I feel lucky?” Well, do ya, punk?
Looks like they picked the wrong house to break into, and perhaps terrorize the old man(?)
One can only imagine the fear of hearing the glass breaking and someone entering your own house. If the tables were turned, the old guy would have just been another crime statistic.
As it turned out I wonder if it was politically incorrect if the home owner Greeted them with .............
“Hellooooooo Baby!”
When a burglar breaks into your residence while you are home are you going to break out the tea and crumpets instead of the Glock???
No, but when the girl is lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds, walking up to her and emptying the clip into her head, and then hanging out with 2 dead bodies at the house for a few days is not the correct course of action either.
I dunno, the thought of ending up facing a crazy bastard like that is at least one tiny factor in my decision not to break into random strangers' houses.
once again, government thwarts the powerful lessons we can learn from the misfortune of others...
“He was responsible for the security of embassies around the world but couldn’t secure his own home. How ironic.”
I’m sure he didn’t have the money the State Department has.
And he did better than State did at Benghazi - the bad guys that attacked him are dead.
I saw a couple of threads a few days ago—I didn’t see yesterdays—but I am warming to the guy. The most recent previous burglary had been on Oct. 28, during which the burglars took a bunch of guns (perhaps all), which may explain why he was left using very small caliber weapons for defense. He probably knew as well as the freepers that have been pointing it out that this was not a good situation. I’m not sure what gun laws are like in Minnesota, but this could even have been something that had been eating at him for a while.
He may have also thought that there was a good chance that the same blokes who had come through earlier were back to finish him off. If he is working in the basement when he hears the break in, he may very well effectively be trapped. There is a very good chance that there are multiple people involved in the break in, and he needs to take them all out using not very effective guns. Everyone coming down the stairs needs to be taken out both so that they cannot shoot him initially and so that they will not distract him as other people come down the stairs. If a third person shows up while he is still dealing with the second, he is not in good shape.
He does seem to have crossed a line, and is certainly doing himself no favours by talking, but I can picture a psychological state justifying it to the extent that I would not be too bothered having him as a neighbor.
His comments prove he is a moron. First thing you say to the cops when something like this happens is “I was in fear for my life” maybe burst into tears. Instead he talks about his “finishing shot”? Whack job idiot.
And this guy used to work for the state department? Oh my.
Let me get in first/early with a great big “GOOD SHOOT”.
