If youre tempted to skip your flu shot, consider this: Getting vaccinated cuts risk for a heart attack or stroke by up to 50 percent, according to two studies presented at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress.
Scientists from TIMU Study Group and Network for Innovation in Clinical Research analyzed published clinical trials involving a total of 3,227 patients, half of whom had been diagnosed with heart disease. Participants, whose average age was 60, were randomly assigned to either receive flu vaccine or a placebo shot, then their health was tracked for 12 months.
Those who got the flu shot were 50 percent less likely to suffer major cardiac events (such as heart attacks or strokes) and 40 percent less likely to die of cardiac causes. Similar trends were found in patients with and without previous heart disease. The findings suggest that flu vaccine is a heart vaccine, lead study author Jacob Udell told Fox News.
Why do flu shots help prevent heart attacks? [...]

Hmmmmm. I'm wondering, how many people in such a clinical trial would go and get another flu shot just in case they may have been given the placebo.

As far as I’m concerned this is just another reason to skip the shot.

Lots of looney comments for sure. The dark ages have returned. It is sad to also see that there are so few educated and enlightened FReepers left.

Oh another study funded by a government. Kinda like the government funded hoax called global warming . Sure there is no agenda and it’s all fake but accurate. I don’t trust anything from the media or government. government doesn’t work. I wonder why they want us to take the flu shot so badly? Any ideas?

It’s pretty interesting. It kind of debunks all of the cholesterol-high fat-sedentary lifestyle theories of heart disease. Or at least a good portion of it.

Oh, really? I’ll stick with my fish oil, Vit D3 and niacin...thank you.... The flu shot only covers something like 1-2 different viruses.....and there are MANY more out there....So, WHICH version of the “flu” does this particular shot cover?

If this is so, maybe the reason why is that fewer flus means fewer strenuous coughs, which in turn can stress the circulatory system. Just a guess. It’s worth investigating to see if it’s true. Vaccines of any sort are a health trade off, and if I were king I’d make them all voluntary.

It's still a crap study...even after reading it. The patients all had diagnosed heart disease and the study period lasted 12 months. They report observed occurrences of cardiac events and postulate that inflammation caused by flu was the cause of those events. They can't prove those immunized were ever actually exposed to flu. There is no control for whether those participants in the study were offered other medications that reduce inflammation independent of the flu shot. It's a puff piece to push flu shots.

My daily regimen of supplements gets the job done for me. No flu shots since 2005. No flu since then either. My co-workers go for the damn shot and lose a couple weeks of work every year. I soldier on unaffected.
