Several news staffers at the Madison-based radio station WTDY have been laid off, including talk-show host John "Sly" Sylvester.
A company memo says the layoffs included all but one member of the news, traffic and on-air staff at 1670 WTDY-AM and 106.7 WTDY-FM.
The WTDY website has been replaced by a holiday message, and the station began airing Christmas music Wednesday.
Station operations manager Randy Hawke says officials will announce the new format after the holidays.
Sylvester tells WISC-TV ( http://bit.ly/UMT7Mh) he was surprised to hear he and six or seven others were being let go. He says his show had good ratings and strong sponsorship.
News director Amy Barrilleaux was also laid off. She says she's sad to see the format go but she understands the reality of the situation.
jwalk - 46 minutes ago Bye bye advertising from the labor unions, so bye bye Sly. Tool. Don't let the door hit ya.
Shake - 48 minutes ago Not too surprising in this extremely right-wing controlled industry. Progressive stations all over the US are being changed to either conservative talk or bland sports. Usually enjoying a loss of market share. KPOJ in Portland went just last week.
WI4Ever - 1 hour ago He is a nasty, nasty man. Full of hate, empowered by the recall effort...interesting that he was fired. Evidently there were not enough far, far left wingers to keep him employed. He, John Nichols and the Capital Times are peas in the same pod.
Good ridance... nufsenuf - 2 hours ago I feel for any individural that loses their job, but many hard working people have lost their jobs and many more will under the current econoomic policies, So it's hard to feel too sympathetic for someone who loses a meaningless job and has failed to contribute to society for thirty three years.
Just so you know, there is plenty of left wing radio in the Mad city. Heck, they even carry NPR on AM in addition to FM. Anyway, this station was the weak sister, best I can tell, and I wouldn’t put a lot of faith in any station sitting at 1670 on the dial. Heck, the Professor’s transistor radio doesn’t go that high! Maybe the FM station had more reach.
Union thug. From what is sounds.......he got about 20 people to applaud. Complete with miserable, crying baby. LOL!

yeah, he is hate filled, but he is representative of the left.
good news ping
Tears By Me Out The Heart.
Living in the Madison area for many years, I can say without reservation that this guy has mental libtardation and he’s as mean as they come. He is the one who called Condi Rice “aunt jemima” etc on BOR’s show years ago. He is a bad bad man. I can just imagine the things he’s said about Sarah Palin. I made it a habit to never listen to 1670. I bet they finally couldn’t get enough advertizers for their hate station.
“Progressive stations all over the US are being changed to either conservative talk or bland sports.”
Attempt to reinstate the Fairness Doctrine is right around
the corner. Rush has been afraid of bringing this up.
He knew once he did it would be in the headlines
the next day and in an E.O. the next week.
I’ve been mentioning the moonbat meltdown in places like Portland OR (KPOJ now Fox Sports) and Seattle (KPTK new
call letters KFNQ as in “the Fan”, probably to be CBS
sports).
Naturally they are blaming the BainRomneyClearChannel
Format Change Machine (not to be confused with the
Cheney-Rove Hurricane Machine) though in the latter case
they’re owned by CBS, not Clear Channel.
Political agenda? CC changed cons. talk WXKS Boston to
comedy (poss. Fox Sports eventually but who knows). But yes some libtalkers get wiped out. I try to tell them this is because they need to make money and prog talk doesn’t cut it. Sports or maybe cons. talk does better.
“Oh these are the public’s airwaves.” Really? Why is it that if I walked into a radio station and asked them to do a certain format they’d say, “We paid for the license and will air what we want. What will make money.”
Can I walk into NPR and demand they put “The Tea Party Show” on? Aren’t these the public’s airwaves? Heck, NPR actually gets taxpayer MONEY.
Sly indeed was supposed to be a “nasty progressive”. He got into controversy in years past.
Unreal! I’ve been missing the deathwatch for WTDY for probably five years now...there is no more completely useless waste of electricity and RF power than Sly.
He’s the one who achieved 15 seconds (not good enough for minutes) of fame by calling Condi Rice “Aunt Jemima”. Gay nasty bigoted progressive liberal who is such a sleazeball he can’t even see up to the rim of the toilet from where he dwells. This is great news! All those nasty ugly remarks about George W. Bush, Condi Rice, Dick Cheney, Gov. Walker, and every other Republican or conservative that you’ve polluted the airwaves with Sly, well right back atcha... “big guy”...
from the Ore. board at radiodiscussions.com, someone said he knew a bunch of Democrats...nobody knew about KPOJ. He asked what they do listen to.
“NPR.”
The creep who insulted out Lt. Governor is now unemployed.
FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list.
When he was at WIBA, I worked as a temp there for a couple of weeks. He got death threats pretty often. His MO was getting people riled up.
Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.
About a week ago there were a lot of job ads for radio personalities all of a sudden, so I was waiting to see which station was cutting their staff. I’ve noticed that a flush of job ads often precedes layoffs.
If I still had my voice, I’d apply. I won a gold medal in a radio newscaster contest back in high school. Unfortunately I’m effectively mute right now.
I don’t know that I would call Sly’s position a meaningless job. Whether it’s slinging your point of view on the radio or behind the counter at McDonald’s to your co-workers I feel everyone is worthy of an opinion and their own soapbox - large or small - in which to spew it. BTW I found your site at MadCityRadio. Just registered for an account. Checking out some of the boards now. I appreciate the laid back site design vs. the garbage aesthetic most sites shoot for these days. Call me old-fashioned. As for MadCityRadio, it’s where anonymous Madison media workers can sling insults at each other with -0- chance of repercussions! But a lot of things do get leaked there.
