Barack Obama blunders again on the world stage

By Nile Gardiner World Last updated: November 19th, 2012

Barack Obama: hardly off to a flying start

It is only two weeks since his re-election, and his second term remains two months away, but Barack Obama is already blundering again on the world stage, with the kind of gaffes that would have been plastered on the front page of The New York Times if they had been committed by George W. Bush when he was in the White House. Obama's first term was littered with foreign policy gaffes, and there is every chance the second term will be more of the same.

On his trip to Asia this week, President Obama struggled to pronounce the name of Aung San Suu Kyi, the most prominent human rights activist in the world. As The Associated Press reports (hat tip: Drudge Report):

As Obama stood next to the world's most recognized democracy icon, he mispronounced her name repeatedly.

Ever gracious, Suu Kyi did not correct her American guest for calling her Aung YAN Suu Kyi multiple times during his statement to reporters after their meeting.

Proper pronunciation for the Nobel laureate's name is Ahng Sahn Soo Chee.

Obama also “botched” his greeting of Burma’s new president, according to the AP:

The meeting came after Obama met with Myanmar's reformist new President Thein Sein – a name he also botched.

As the two addressed the media, Obama called his counterpart "President Sein," an awkward, slightly affectionate reference that would make most Burmese cringe.

Don’t know if everyone realizes how huge a insult to touch a female in the southeast Asia without an invitation.

In their mind, it means he thinks he owns her or she is involved in a profession where he thinks it is acceptable to touch her IOW: a hooker.

This is one time I wish he had just bowed.

King Obama has no need to know the names of his underlings.

Someone asked me this morning if I was concerned about fact the country is going to hell economically yet he flys off to Asia.

I thought about that for a second and figured two things, any day with him out of the country is a good day. Second, I would only worry about his being out of the country rather than handling matters here if I thought he had a clue about how to fix one problem. This guy is a complete dope, I don’t even think he could load a dishwasher.

While he is over in Asia, I hope he stumbles into one of those border conflicts.

Obama is quite the nerd, bungling along while MSM covers up, like for a weakling who needs their protection. Too bad the TV comics - Leno, Letterman, etc - are among the true believes. They are missing a lot of material for humor.

Etiquette:

•Never touch a person’s hair, head or cheek, even if you consider it as a friendly gesture. Myanmar people would not consider it friendly, and will think you are rude.

•Don’t touch any part of a lady’s body. http://www.myanmar2day.com/myanmar-culture-custom/2008/12/myanmar-etiquette-general-rules/

What about the Queen of England toast gaffe.

I think that was the most moronic thing I've ever seen anyone do.

I liked some of these - very amusing. Seems like sensible advice in any culture!!!

Never raise your underwear above your head. This is considered very rude.

Never clean your feet in the basin you used to clean your hands and face.

Never use the water from the drinking pot to wash your feet. Myanmar people will consider this an insult.

Never put your feet on the pillow used for the head, or sit on the pillow for the head.

Never use your feet to point to a thing or a place. This is an insult for a Myanmar (Burmese).

Don’t touch any part of a lady’s body. You might end up in a police station.

I think he also called the country ‘Myanmar’. Myanmar is not the recognized name of the nation, because it lends legitimacy to the military junta who changed it.

Obungler in chief. What the hell is he doing there anyway? We have enough problems here.

And he has learned all these lessons very well, from his own in-house mentor, Joe Biden.

Subtle insult by mispronunciations, by violating cultural mores, and by an abiding, sneering show of arrogance in every confrontation. Hard to believe this guy is “likeable” in any social venue.

Just recently a FREEPER told me that I underestimate dear leader, I wonder if that is even possible. If I say that someone is flat broke but they turn out to actually have a net worth of two cents have I underestimated them?

Maybe it's all part of the "urban" culture. It seems that whenever I go to an inner-city waiting room and give my name to a receptionist, if she is one of Holder's people, I find that my last name gets a whole lot of unnecessary syllables added when I'm called.
